1 brother killed, 1 hurt in Apple Valley crash
Two brothers from Lakeville, apparently heading to school, were the victims in a crash this morning on wet, slushy 160th Street in Apple Valley.
Christopher Carlson, 18, was driving his brother, Richard, toward Apple Valley-Rosemount High School when their car crossed the low median strip on 160th St. (County Rd. 46) and struck a pickup truck and then a school bus, said Capt. Craig Anglin of Apple Valley police.
Christopher was pronounced dead at the scene; Richard was in intensive care Wednesday afternoon in Gillette Children's Specialty Health Care in Regions Hospital. The driver of the pickup truck and the bus driver escaped injury. There were no children on the Independent School District 196 bus.
Anglin said investigators don't yet know why the Carlson car crossed the median or how fast the car was traveling. The road at that point, between Pilot Knob Road and Diamond Path, was recently improved. "It is relatively flat with an unobstructed view," Anglin said.
Investigators closed 160th Street until about 11:30 a.m.
The Apple Valley Police Department, Lakeville Police Department and the Minnesota State Patrol are investigating.

Christopher J. Carlson
1985-2004
Christopher John Carlson, was by far, one of the most intelligent and caring people I have ever known. He was generous, loving, compassionate for everyone. But anyone could say that about anyone when they die.
But he really was. He really, really was. He was one of my best friends, one of the best friends I ever had, ever will have. I can even say...that for a time, I fell into a hormonal teenage girl period in which I was convinced we were made for each other. And those feelings, though requited for a week or so, they soonafter died. But our friendship remained strong.
I never saw him hurt anyone. Not ever. And he was always, always looking out for others. He was my Hybrid, my onii-chan, my CC, my brother, and best friend.
None of us will ever forget you. I know that I won't. Be safe in heaven, Chris. I love you more than words can possibly say.
Edit this if you want, post it in your journal, do whatever you'd like. This is just a deeply saddenned friend trying to reach out to her loved one.
I've found a few poems by him, in case anyone is interested, and I'm sure they'll be found during his funeral.

Dreams
Flying gracefully above in the sky,
Watching as many things pass by
The world where imagination is real
The world of dreams. Of wondrous appeal
Your mind will take you. It will show you things
In the world of dreams, your mind gives you wings
It gives you the keys to open each door
It will expand the terrain. Give you more to explore.
To go there can only be done while you sleep,
To unlock all the thoughts your subconscious mind keeps
Anything goes when you're in control
It is what fuels the fire. It is the coal
It is your paper. It is your pen
Your dreams will lead you again and again
Through the hidden paths of the mind,
Only to give you more to find.
Flying gracefully through the sky,
Watching as many things pass by
Hold on to your dreams, and hold them tight
They may be all that helps you sleep at night.

Goodnight, big brother.
