1. Total number of books I've owned: In my whole lifetime? Thousands. Maybe tens of thousands. I have at least five full bookshelves right now.
2. Last book I bought: Well, I went out and bought some comic books Wednesday night because I'd had a craving for comic books and Chinese buffet food since I turned in my last final paper. The last actual book I bought was The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper, because I found a cheap copy in a thrift store.
3. Last book I read: Shamela by Henry Fielding, right after I read Pamela by Samuel Richardson. I read both books for a final paper. Shamela was a burlesque parody of Pamela which was a dull book in 2 volumes about a servant girl who is so wonderful and pious and virtuous that she resists her master's attempts to seduce/rape her until he is so overcome by her virtuousness that he marries her. It's an important book because it was the first real novel even written in the epistolary style (a book consisting entirely of letters written between the characters).
4. 5 books that mean a lot to me:
*The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy--Still one of the funniest books ever written.
*The Complete Works of Aristophanes--Because it helped me in my argument that comedy could too be great works of literature that still have meaningful things to say to modern people.
*The ColSec Trilogy by Douglas Hill--One of my favorite books from when I was a kid.
*Sargasso of Space by Andre Norton--Because I have a weakness for old science fiction/space adventure books.
*On Writing by Stephen King--Because it answered some questions that were important to me at the time I read it.
