Volkhvoi, I am so sorry for you all...putting a pet to sleep is absolutely heartbreaking...I remember when we had to do the deed with our young six month old kitten, Remus, the brother of the famous Dalek defeater Romulus...and it is horrible !! He had a renal infection from a whole bunch of nasty bladder stones, that had gone too far, and backed up into his kidneys because he wouldn't let us know anything was wrong until it was far too late...some cats are very secretive when they are ill...
I think I remember you telling us when you got this cat, didn't you...does that mean he wasn't very old ?
We rescued him from the local pound last December. The volunteer there guessed he was maybe 3 to 5 years old at the time.
We guess he'd been ill treated at some point and we knew had slept rough for a while (x-rays showed a bb pellet and a right femor broken high near his hip, he had no lower lip for reasons we never discovered, and he had a real talent for surgically picking the one item he wanted out of the kitchen garbage without disturbing the contents of the bin).
He was a cautious soul; he always made sure he was welcome on J's lap, which he always was. He'd look at J patting his lap, then look at J's face, look at his lap, his face, lap, face, and only then make the leap. Then he'd snuggle up on J's chest, often with J's hand under his butt so that he wouldn't slide down and disturb his nap. He had a loud, rough purr you could hear in the next room.
I am glad we gave him a soft and safe nap spot, even if only for a few months.
Saw your comment on my journal and though we don't know each other, thank you for stopping by. It's a terrible thing to lose these dear friends, but I have been comforted to find out how many people understand. They are irreplacable and bring so much to our lives.
I posted this on my journal, but I will post it here for you, and Pinky.

Actually, the volunteer told me Pinky had been at the pound for 3 months because no one thought he was pretty.
