As usual, I was up late the night before finishing up those last few things that have to be done before leaving. Silly little things, like actually packing the bike, that had been put off in favor of fucking around with the new GPS (StreetPilot 2720, picked up cheap). Around 0200h Friday I had the hard-bags packed, and pulled out the tent to ( Read more... )

It was a great trip, except for dropping the bike and getting hit in the head with the bird. Even the really gnarly offroad bits left me with a certain satisfaction after they were behind me.

Skyline Drive: Lovely, beautiful scenery, not challenging. I found it worth it 'cause the road surface was nice and I'm a sucker for the views.

Happy to hear you made it home OK.

That is a perfect description of Skyline Drive. I ended up shifting gears and enjoying the scenery, so it was not a bad decision, just not what I expected. I had not budgeted 3-4 hours for that stretch of road, but I do think it was worth riding. Now that I know what it is like, I may still work it into future long trips as a short, relaxing day.

I've ridden the BRP on my bike, and found it lovely but unexciting. Since I don't particularly crave 'excitement' on my bike, I loved it; your observation about cruising two-up is on target, IMO. I am unsurprised you found it somewhat dull.

I, too, would like someday to take a long ride without dropping the bike. Let me know when that blessed event happens to you, would you?

I was not particularly looking for much excitement at that point, I was just surprised at how many people I think of as aggressive sport riders had recommended the road. The tight technical roads I took to get to the BRP were a lot of fun, but I did not expect the parkway to be like those. I think if the speed limit had been set to something more reasonable, say 55mph, I would not have commented on the roads.

As it happens, taking it easy Thursday night and Wednesday morning was probably a good thing, since it left me well rested for the long haul home.
