Work is going through a massive reorganization right now.  I've been mostly absent for a bit, and, I'm sorry to say, I'm going to continue to be AWOL for a while.

I've been doing some sewing in order to relax, and I thought I'd share some of my progress.  In the past, I've made a few skirts, some pj pants, and the occasional ill-fitting top.  This ( Read more... )

From someone who can barely sew on a button - good for you.

An idea for a dress that works with curves - the classic wrap dress. it might be hard to find a pattern and you may have to get a vintage one but that dress is fantastic for curves, less than curvy and no curves. Though really it's made for curves.

This is a great idea! So far I've only found faux-wraps, but I know at least one company that does vintage patterns. Thank you!

I hate tiny cap sleeves like the ones she's got--they make the arms look disjointed, like they don't belong, and I expect in daily life they end up flipped up in a weird way.

Yeah, it's just ill-advised, I think. Either go sleeveless or add sleeves, for heavens sake! If I make it, I think I shall make it sleeveless. Then I can toss on a cardigan, as in the traditional way of librarians everywhere (at least everywhere they crank up the ac....)

Hmmm ... Lord, it's been a while since I sewed anything but a few costumes for The Young Lady. She actually made herself a dress from a Burda pattern at one point a few years ago. She used one of the Palmer-Pletsch books on fitting to adjust the pattern. They also have some patterns that are supposed to teach you how to fit things. Their emphasis is more on plus sizes, though, I think. The smallest size I see there on their patterns is an 8.

I don't tend to wear dresses any more ... I should probably think about making some tops, though.

Yeah, I'd heard the Palmer-Pletsch books were a bit more for the plus sizes, but I did get one of their patterns for a knit dress. It had smaller sizes than some of their other patterns, and I figured that since it was knit, even if I didn't do it perfectly, I might be OK.

I've really been enjoying taking more control of my wardrobe. I have certain colors that I love, but they're not being made in women's clothing right now. I don't know who has decided that light yellow-green is 'in' for women, but it makes me look a zombie! I miss my jewel tones. So, now I'm making them!
