Watching Him Sleep
Theta watches him sleep fascinated by the dark fringe of his eyelashes. His gaze caresses the angles of his nose, the plane of his forehead, the curve of his cheek. Theta wants to kiss his lips, dusty pink framed by the black scruff of his beard, but it took him so long to fall asleep he doesn't want to wake him.
Koschei had a bad day, had been fighting another one of his 'spells', and it had taken Theta hours to quiet the sound that only his lover could hear. He needed the rest so badly that Theta didn't even dare to stroke his head to straighten out his long fever-sweat damp hair lest it disturb his sleeping mind.
He worried that his mere presence, a shifting on the bed, might be too much. He knew, though, if he moved away, if he wasn't there should Koschei awaken in the middle of the night, it could bring back the drums. So he lay there quietly beside him.
In the dim light from the window, Theta watched the rise and fall of his chest. Koschei was always going on about how beautiful he was. Theta was used to taking his compliments with more than a grain of salt. He knew the other Time Lords looked at him as some sort of oddity, a half human freak. Not his Koschei. To Koschei he was beautiful. But Koschei himself... Theta didn't think he ever realized how handsome he was. He didn't think of himself that way, but Theta certainly did. Just looking at him could arouse Theta's desires.
His eyes moved rapidly beneath his eyelids, dreaming. No signs of nightmares or distress, his breathing stayed calm. Theta slid down farther in the bed and snuggled closer to him. Koschei didn't stir. Emboldened by that, he slipped his arm under Koschei's neck and drew him into his arms. He brushed his lips lightly on his cooling brow and whispered, "I love you." Finally convinced that his lover would be all right and sleep through the night, Theta let himself drift off to sleep as well, never letting Koschei go.
