I'm reading Dashiell Hammett, and I'm nearly finished with The Glass Key, which is the last story in tthe Everyman's Library collection. And man. Ned Beaumont, you're taking this manly stoicism a bit far, don't you think? And, all the manly face touching. And ( Read more... )

HAMMETT LOVE!!!

I have the Glass Key. I agree, Ned is, um, sorta, yeah, a bit much. It's a very readable book, but not half as good as The Thin Man or Maltese.

Yesssssssssssssss. Material goods. Give/want/need.

You own Jhoom Barabar Jhoom yet? ^^

<3! Yes, I am on my (limited) hardboiled kick and going through Chandler and Hammett this month. Ned's kind of awesome, but also wtf-ery, but also MANLY!AWESOME, but -- anyways, it's an interesting read. I don't think I've read many third-person limited POVs without even internal thoughts, and yet somehow it's pretty compelling. Although sometimes I still have no idea what's going on.

The Everyman's Library collection I have only has The Glass Key, The Dain Curse, and 4 linked Continental Op shorts (the ones with the Big Knockover characters). So much fun. I was debating buying Red Harvest and stuff the other day. BUT I RESISTED. So far.

I make grabby hands at everything~

No! I have yet to order it. I should really lay off buying stuff right now... but um... CDs, so many new/old CDs. And books. And omg comics. *hiss hiss*

Heh!

I looks at this post again and OMG it's GROOOOOOOOOWN!

I haven't read the Dain Curse, Red harvest, or the Continental Ops... But Maltese and Thin Man are the perennial classics for good reason, methinks. (Oh, god, you want WTF, wait until you see how they DRINK in the Thin Man. Holy crap!)

Ned is kinda fucked up. Of course, all his heroes so far seems to be pretty darn psychologically damaged in some way or 10, so this probably says something. Didn't Hammett just up and stop writing at one point?

Interesting note below about Joe... but I think that's one of the things I love so much about his writing, it's so fluid and colloquially written that there are phrases and words so of their time that they don't even linger in any collective memory. The setting, and voice is so absolutely perfect.

Now I needs the rest of his books! THANKS, man! Feh. ^_-

(What do you think of Chandler? I like him, but he doesn't stand out for me like Hammett. Like, it's excellent hardboiled, but it's not genre-transcendent.)

DUDE! I remember when that dog food commercial was running on tv! THAT WAS TOM WAITS? *dies*

I am afraid I am unfamiliar with the stories you are reading but um... was that fanfiction you posted about it or a direct quote from the book? Bcuz, dayaammmnnn!

I am thoroughly enjoying Iggy & Tom! Do you remember watching was it... the second Crow movie with Iggy in it? Dude is tight.

Yeh! Tom Waits has such a distinctive voice though. But um, DOG FOOD. HEE.

That was a direct quote! There's more and weirder later. XD Seriously, they're actually torturing/beating Beaumont, but um, yeah, I got to that scene and I was like, WAIT, WHAT.

Noooo, I didn't watch the second Crow movie (or if I did, I erased it from my braindrive for better, worser things I cannot unsee). Iggy is awesome thoughhh. Scary awesome, but still awesome.

Day off! Hatred!

joe == coffee????? pooo? ?__? Even the urbandictionary has no explanation that makes sense.

In any case, that doesn't look like a particularly pleasant scene. But I looked up the book, and it's classic noir, not something salacious? :X

Joe as in um... well clearly he passed out. So I guess it means he passed out.

Uh yeah, it's super!noir and the stuff before that scene is pretty brutal (they're beating him up), and there are more questionable scenes later. XD But in a MANLY way. And they're just being MANLY.

VERY MANLY.

Hamentashen! :D

(...er, that's the name of the triangle things. It's a treat usually made for the Jewish holiday of Purim.)

Also, wow, that excerpt is...um...questionable. XD;

Yes! That's what it is! She made mysterious jam and pecan filled ones. Om nom nom.

The book gets worse. There's wrist holding and "me and my sweetheart" and loud invitations upstairs to a private room for more fun. <3
