Ghost story (entry for contest)

I live in a house in Small Town, NC, which was built in 1939. The house has been updated many times, so it's modern, but still has a lot of it's shotgun charm. On the walkway in front of the house, is a memorial to someone who died in a war. The writing is mostly worn down, but visible when the sun is setting. We moved into the house in June of ( Read more... )

yep yep yep
I handle these situations the same way. I talk to them.

The one time I had an evil presence I literally JUMPED out of bed and challenged it. I was terrified for my kids and was ready to tackle ANYthing in any form. I revoked it verbally.

We have had lots of small things happen over the years. Something came with the property. A woman died in this house but we never see her. This entire sect of land was vast farmland and vineyards. Something happened in these fields and left a lasting impression.

Oooo, that makes me feel excited, like I'd spend time investigating the past and find out what happened. I can remember reading about your experience with the evil presence... made me get goosebumps!

Somebody did give me a headsup on the property here. It does have a past.

My shadowman has not been around in awhile although my husband told me we had a "visitor" last week. This time it strolled into the kitchen and touched the coffee pot. Hubby swore it was me walking in and getting some coffee and he looked up from the living room into the kitchen, and nobody was there. I was still fast asleep.

I remember seeing pictures of your house and being so envious. I love old houses from the early 1900's.

But spirits?? Kinda neat and spooky at the same time. When I was a kid we lived in a house built in the 40's/50's and I used to hear the doorbell ring even when nobody pushed it and nobody else would hear it but me.

Oh, wild!

After my grandfather died, I could hear him walking in my parent's home. He would come down the stairs from the 3rd floor to the 2nd floor, then down to the first floor and one more 1/2 flight to the basement landing where he would get bird feed to put out. He had a distinctive shuffling walk. For months after he died, I could hear him.

My mom said it was because I wanted to hear him, but I disagree.

The day he died, a hawk sat outside the family room window and watched us from a tree branch. And, there was a butterfly in the house, which flitted around for a couple days. He died in January.

Ooh... spirits!
i've never seen the memorial. next time I'm down i'll have to check it out.

You know how old OUR house is. Did Terry ever tell you about our spirits? He/She/They have been quiet for a while now, but the first couple of years we had periods of missing shoes and other articles of clothing. After a week or two, the items would show up right where they belonged.
And over a period of about a week, something kept moving Terry's office chair over to the window next to my chair. He thought I was doing it, I thought he was doing it. We'd go to bed with the chair in it's proper place and wake up to find it across the room.

Do your animals seem to notice anything? Sometimes in the evening, all three cats would suddenly look at the stairs with ears perked up and once I think Alex hissed. We never did see anything.

The animals weren't with me that first time, and I've not noticed any specific reaction, but when I feel the presence, I'm totally alone. I sleep with at least 2 of the dogs, so that cuts down any interaction during the night.

You told me about the cats... creepy!! And I can tell you, I feel something in your guest room. It's quiet and watches.

I'm going to try to take a picture of the walk with the writing on it. Maybe I can catch it in good light and post it on Flickr.

That's weird about the guest room. A couple of years ago Zoe kept telling us that people were talking in there while she was trying to sleep. She said that they were talking very quietly and she couldn't hear them. I've also had the feeling I was being watched and "not alone" when I've slept in there.

The discovery of the wad of hair would have gotten to me. :| I have to go to bed now and I'm alone in the house. *shudder*

Yeah, it was ... interesting. And creepy.. I wish there was a better word for it, maybe disconcerting. I wondered if it could have been on the top of the shelf of the linen closet and maybe a cat pulled it out and was playing with it, but at that time, there was only one cat, Bert, and he wasn't much for exploring and playing.
