knitting socks

Can any of my knitting friends please explain, in plain English, the rationale behind sock construction?

What I need to read, without any knitting abbreviations, is the purpose of each portion of the sock. For instance: the toe is so many stitches to cast on, and then after 1/2 inch you want to increase by a certain percent to make room for the ( Read more... )

This is exactly what I needed to read, an explanation of how someone makes a sock. Do you know of any blog entries of sock construction, without the pattern that I could read?

Wendy Knits is an awesome site. I looked at the pattern for the socks you suggested, but instead decided to just cast on and follow your general directions. I've increased about 3 times so far, and I'm going to work on it more this evening. I think that if I can get one done, then I'll be ready for 2 socks on 2 circs. It seems to me that sock knitting is just an intuitive thing, and that I should only have to have a pattern if I want a decorative cuff.
