Okay. So you know how families can have these really weird in-jokes that make absolutely no sense to anyone else? Those jokes that, heard out of context, easily gain the weirdest looks imaginable?
One of those in-jokes that my family has is about car auctions. Yes you read that right. Car. Auctions. My stepdad likes watching them (specifically the barrett somethingorother one. I dunno what it's name is) though why is beyond me. They're nice, sure, but it isn't that interesting. Then again I'm not a guy so what should I know?
But yeah. Back to the in-joke. When my mom first started dating my stepdad I had no clue what the auctioneer was saying (and still don't. The joke's gotten that out of hand with me that I completely ignore any slowing down of the words said by the auctioneer) and just made do with what I could make out of what the television was saying.
So, during a commercial break, with my mom nearby on the family computer, I turned to Jerry (my stepdad) and asked;
"Is it just me or is the auctioneer guy going 'hamanahamanahamanatwo thousand! hamanahamanahamanatwenty-five!' because that's all I can hear."
My parents cracked up and the joke stuck. The car auctions that my dad watches are no longer car auctions in my house, they're "The Hamanas". Which, I realized today when asking my stepdad why The Hamanas were on in his and mom's bedroom while they were watching Indiana Jones in the living room (at the other end of the house) could make for amusing looks.
I'll need to find a way to test my theory. Just go to a mall food court during lunchtime on a weekend and start talking loudly with my sister about how big the Hamanas were on TV.
