As a proud former citizen of the People's Republic of the ACT, the only Australian jurisdiction to vote 'yes' in the last referendum, I can only agree, despite the fact that I am also a citizen of the UK. Strangely, as someone who 'serves allegiance to a foreign power', I am unable to stand for election to parliament. So, if the UK is a 'foreign power', how can its head of state be our head of state?

While I'm a little biased (Her Maj is a distant cousin, several times removedyadayaddayadda), I am actually a monarchist because I don't want an elective head of state that may be the focus of a cult of personality. That way lies either tinpot dictatorship or the US^h^h^h^hElective Monarchy. While having a foreign ethnically german hereditary monarchy is not the best of things, most republics I've visited have been worse, so I don't think it's worth either you lot, or us lot, becoming elective presidential republics. Actually, maybe us lot should ask Liz if she has a spare cousin of prince or duke level we could marry off to a scion of the Kingitanga, and turn the resultant family into local pointy hats.
