Carrier Sense, Multiple Access / Collision Detect.

Well it's moved on a bit since then at the topology/packet transmission level, but fundamentally it's still the same principle.  Ethernet networks, that sort of network that your computers at home are connected together by and also the network that is the main and primary communications channel ( Read more... )

Hmmm. What do you mean by private?

Are you saying that internet security doesn't work, that I can't do my banking over the internet?

If you just meant that anything I write to you can be theoretically seen by the person I'm bitching about, I'll work on the theory that they're not that capable, and there's too much traffic to be bothered filtering.

Or if this is that the government knows that I'm a member of GetUp and Bush Heritage, it's ok, they knew that when I signed the petitions.

I'm still a lot more worried about Facebook, because they will give information about me to people who know me, and to whom I don't want to give information.

Internet banking is encrypted. It's also a short session with rapidly changing keys. It can be seen but it won't mean much to those who see it. With enough computer gear they can break your keys and see your session but by then you've moved on to another bank (and not to mention gotten old and died).

Anything you write to me can be theoretically seen by the person I'm bitching about, yes.

Yes, the government probably knows what forums you post to.

Facebook sessions aren't encrypted. Neither are LiveJournal posts. Both are alarmingly public, even the ones you mark as "private". Comments on someone else's posts aren't a private conversation between you and them, unless you habitually hold your private conversations with people by standing on the rooftops of adjacent buildings and using loudspeakers.

So what your saying is I shouldn't mention online about all those prostitutes I've murdered and where hid the barrels of acid slowly dissolving them?

You are so right! Nothing on the internet is private. It all tracks somewhere.
I would stay off the phone. Everything is wireless now. If it's in the air, it's free game.
