Digital Devil Saga pimping post
You know what we haven't had recently? A digital devil saga pimping post. Which is a crying shame, as it is an awesome game and is chock-full of appable characters, especially with counselor apps coming up! And so, Serph and I have worked together to bring you this one.
Warning: There are some spoilers in the concents of this pimping post, because it's next to impossible to talk about certain characters without them. Read at your own risk! If you decide not to read, just remember: DDS is awesome and you should all play it. And app from it.
The Story
I'm just copying this off the games themselves.
DDS1
In the Junkyard, rival Tribes fight an endless war -- vying for supremacy and the right to ascend to Nirvana. Everything begins to change when a blinding light interrupts a skirmish between two Tribes. Serph, leader of the Embryon, awakens after the flash to find that his opponents have been violently slain. In a crater left behind lies a young girl with black hair.
The people of the Junkyard soon discover the effects of the mysterious light: Tribe members transform into demons, and feed an insatiable hunger by devouring their enemies. Along with this new "Atma" comes another strange power: emotion.
Soon after, the Karma Temple issues a new law: "Devour the other Tribes and bring the black-haired girl to Nirvana." Hostility only grows, as the other Tribes renew their efforts with increased hatred and zeal.
The Embryon struggle to defeat the opposition and protect Sera, the young girl, who may just hold the key to everything...
DDS2
A black sun bleeds despair across the land of Nirvana...
Serph, leader of the Embryon, wanders aimlessly through the lifeless streets before him. In the Junkyard, his Tribe fought a gruesome war, hoping the light of heaven would relieve their suffering. In the end, Serph's world vanished, along with the comrades who stood by his side.
All that awaited him in Nirvana were endless streets littered with the silent remains of human statues.
The Promised Land was nothing but a new hell...
The Characters
One of the absolute best features of DDS is its characters. Every character, however background, has a distiinct personality and an identity. And they're all awesome in unique and special ways.
Serph
Status: Apped and in play (Camper,
silent_crown)
About: Serph is everyone's favourite cannibal! Leader of the Embryon Tribe, Serph is mostly silent, kind of dumb sometimes, and a very reasonable, considerate person. Who eats other people. He genuinely cares about the people he deals with, is gentle, kind, and mostly dependable, except when he accidentally leads his people into traps, which is quite often. Also, he's an AI (like quite a few of the characters in the game), and has come to terms with this fact fairly easily, but normal life and its things like plants and animals is still new and innovative to him. Come play with him in camp and help confuse him about how ordinary life works. Also app him the rest of his Embryon. And Sera. Especially Sera.
Heat
Status: Apped and in play (Camper,
vore_crimes)
About: Heat is an aggressive, angry cannibal who plays anti-hero as often (if not more) than he plays hero. Heat likes eating people and will often get into great depth at how great it feels to feel their blood sliding down his throat, and other savory things. He has two trains of thought at any time: Food food food, and Sera Sera Sera. Desperately in love with Sera and frequently wavering between fondness and aggression against the rest of the Embryon, Heat does things his own way. And his own way involves beating things to a pulp and eating them whenever possible. He also gets embarrassed very, very easy, when emotions come into play, and is known to blush, stammer, and mumble. Come play with him in camp. And app the rest of the Embryon ok. ESPECIALLY SERA.
Cielo
Status: Apped and dropped. (Camper,
beatdownblue). Available.
About: Cielo is a happy-go-lucky guy with a heavy Jamaican accent. Often playing the role of the comic relief in the game, Cielo likes joking around, trying to cheer his comrades up, and showing off his, um, "jammin' Latin rhythms". He also doesn't wear any pants, and in his demon form, he lacks elbows. He fights with a switchblade that pops out of his head and with his wing-edges. Although he's a pretty cheerful guy, there's occasional hints he's deeply sad and angry at fate turning him into, you know, a demon cannibal, and at discovering that he's artificial life, though he refuses to let it get him down outwardly, preferring to just go on faith that his feelings for everyone are real -- "you gotta follow de love, ya?" Cielo's closest friends are Gale, for reasons inexplicable to the entire world, and the cat who is secretly an enlightened floating hermaphrodite. Bring Cielo back to us, folks!
Argilla
Status: Available as camper.
About: Argilla is an attractive female sniper and an extremely powerful magic-user. She's a very feminine person, but that hardly keeps her strength from showing through, as one of her introductory moments in the game is shooting an enemy's head off. Her most dominant characteristic is her depth of feeling: she genuinely cares about all her friends deeply, even when they frustrate her to the point of anger, and hates unnecessary killing. She deeply resists becoming cannibalistic at first, and when she finally accepts that her new nature is necessary to living, she devours others as painlessly as she can and with the eventual goal of returning to normal no matter what it takes. Although she often plays a foil to Heat, as they both take very extreme stances on the cannibalism, they still treat each other as comrades without hesitation. Argilla also suffers from an extreme form of the kiss of death, where she doesn't even need to kiss someone -- Argilla showing romantic interest in someone is a sure-fire way to guarantee that they'll die through. That said, it's canonically implied that she's bisexual, with a female love interest in the first game, and a male in the second (though she still carries the memory of the first love interest near and dear to her heart). Also, in her demon form, her breasts eat people. They also talk. You know you want to app Argilla and eat people with your breasts, right?
Gale
Status: Available as camper.
About: Gale is the Embryon's tactician and quite possibly its most terrifying member. Although he seems cool, calm, and collected, and in fact resisted gaining functional emotions for an extremely long time, once he finally did he became ruthless in his pursuit of honour and vengeance. Gale still has a great deal of difficulty understanding emotional behaviour, and his standard reply to many statements is "I do not comprehend", though he is gradually getting to understand that "some things must be felt, not comprehended". Gale's demon form is Poncho McRiverdance -- I only exaggerate a little, given that it both wears a poncho and attacks by dancing and kicking -- and his head splits down the centre to eat people. Generally speaking, Gale takes everything as srs bizness and is always analysing situations to get the best result out of everything. Surprisingly, he's remarkably good with children, if said children can get past the fact that he is entirely okay with messily devouring other people in front of them. Although he comes across as rather dour, he's not above poking fun at his other Embryon members, especially Cielo -- all without cracking a smile, of course.
Sera
Status: Available as camper.
About: Whooboy. Sera is probably the one about whom there's the most to say, and they're all spoilers. BE WARNED. The Embryon first met Sera as an amnesiac girl they found sleeping naked under a strange object that appeared in the Junkyard one day, who had mysterious powers to help prevent them from going berserk, and who everyone were told to hunt down and bring "to Nirvana". Turns out, however, that Sera was actually not from this AI world at all but originally the elite supernatural hacker who created it initially as a playground to help comfort herself in her loneliness. The project got hijacked by the military and turned into a training ground for urban warfare to develop AIs that would eventually be implanted into the heads of soldiers. This, in turn, got hijacked by a scientist woman who wanted to destroy the world, by using it as a testing zone for her Demon Virus. DEEP BREATH. Sera is actually much younger than the teenager she appears to be, actually only seven and aged beyond her body's physical growth by the tests she was being put through. You see, Sera is candidate number 19 for the role of "cyber shaman", elite world-programmers who can interface with the world's data and communicate with god through the aid of scientific tools. She's also the only surviving candidates, all the others having died under the stress. Unfortunately bad shit happened in the real world five years earlier and Sera ended up accidentally unleashing the first demon virus, turning the sun black, and making it so people can't go outside without dying.
She understandably bears an incredible guilt complex that's kept her complacent to the scientists and military who 'own' her, though when push comes to shove, her loyalty ultimately belongs to the AIs she'd originally created and who had gained sentience and come to love her on their own. Though she ultimately blames herself whenever absolutely anything goes wrong for them, she'll fight to protect them, and desperately wants to make up for all the wrong she's done and continues to do when getting upset (like that time she accidentally uploaded half the earth into the sun). She's terribly in love with Serph, and her situation with Heat is very awkward because of it.
SO IN SHORT: App Sera! a) She is most awesomest with computerized things ever. b) Her shiny new demon form has undercleavage. c) She's secretly seven and yet is in a love triangle. d) Her mother and her father is the same person and also probably the worst parent for abuse by neglect and scientific experimentation ever. e) Serph and Heat will be pedos for you.
Roland
Status: Available as counselor. (a guess; he's still fairly young, but he has a peer and best friend who had a child around age 12, so he's probably in his mid twenties at least.)
About: Unlike most of the main cast, Roland started out a normal human. In a series of ...interesting... life choices, he became an alcoholic terrorist forever guilty over the death of his best friend, fatalistically leading his terrorist group in a slow and defensive manner, and the type of person whom his adoptive son could only describe as a loser. One honour-related bitchslap from Gale later and Roland decided to clean up his life and act in a respectible and responsible manner by trading a severe dependance on alcohol for mandatory cannibalism by injecting himself with the demon virus. He's still a terrorist, though. Roland's life is sort of like a series of "Good idea: Bad idea" shorts, you see. Much happier with the way cannibalism was changing his life for the better, Roland quickly sharpens up into a badass, attentive guy who's kinda cool and will totally win over all the attractive cannibal ladiez. He wears glasses, looks totally normal, and carries a big shotgun. In demon form, Roland has a head shaped like a fruitbowl, mouth flaps that keep his teeth discreetly tucked away, and a diamond pattern all over his body. Occasionally edging on the tragic, Roland understands the true nature of karma, and is completely aware that whatever negatives life throws at him is something he's earned -- still, he's decided to face it, and is kind of more awesome because of it. His hobbies include punching electronics, putting rotting demon corpses in cans, and writing novels even he admits are crappy.
Harley
Status: Available as camper (guess). ETA: Not enough canon to be considered appable.
About: Harley is the first enemy the Embryon fights, and as such, doesn't have much screen time, but what he has gives him a fairly obvious personality. Harley is kind of a coward and really not okay with his or other people's cannibalism, though the aggression of the Embryon -- who hunt him down through his own territory trying to figure out what's going on -- makes him decide that the world's a place where it's "eat or be eaten". His demon form is a bipedal fire-breathing zebra with vestigal arms.
Jinana
Status: Available as camper (guess).
About: Spoilers in this one! Jinana is the leader of the Maribel tribe, a tribe of punks (literally). She allied herself with the Embryon in an attempt to defeat a mutual enemy. A proud woman with standards, although she supports her tribe in their eating of others, she herself refuses to devour people for food as she finds it a "sad" thing, a resolution which leads to her unfortunate... going insane, frenzying in an attempt to eat her Embryon friends, and ultimately dying in Argilla's lap. Canonically implied to be Argilla's first love, Jinana thinks Argilla's standards, gratitude, and kindness are a beautiful thing, and Argilla's tears for her and oaths of comradeship are what ultimately awaken Jinana into true sentience, from her previous bland AI state. THERE'S NOTHING FUNNY I CAN SAY ABOUT THIS SCENE, IT MAKES ME TOO SAD. NEXT.
Bat
Status: Available as camper.
About: I'm letting Serph write this one because I know my negative biases would show. XD I will say up front that if you app Bat, Heat would love to finally get to eat you. Just sayin'.
Bat is, in short, a sexy bastard. He is a sadist and obsessed with power; he never hesitated before committing treason. It’s hard to get inside his head, but it’s clear he doesn’t trust in anyone but himself. Besides, he has a very hate-hate relationship with Argilla and Heat.
Bat switches sides more often than a grilled cheese sandwich, likes to gloat about how all cannibals are equally bastards because they all eat people, and shoots lasers from his head-crotch that turns other people into bats. Also, he will stab you.
Lupa
Status: Available as pure awesome ...counselor.
About: Spoilers, again! Lupa is pure awesome. Leader of the Wolves, Lupa is honour incarnate, and repeatedly toppy mctoptops Gale on the subject until Gale becomes just as honour-centric as Lupa is. So unique is he that he's the only important character whose demon from ends up named from Greek mythology instead of Hindu mythology (Cerberus, yes. XD). Lupa places his tribe's welfare far, far beyond his own, refuses to put them in danger when he could put himself in danger instead, and helps point out to the Embryon how their world is essentially wrong in strange ways, like how they know what children are despite never having seen them in their lives. (Though Lupa himself has dreams of a child who calls him father). He's another of those incredibly noble types who I can't say funny things about because his tragic scenes make me feel funny in my kokoros, but he and Gale are kind of gay for each other. Would make awesome counselor.
Varin Omega
Status: Available as counselor.
About: Varin is the leader of the Brutes Tribe and, in short, a drill sargeant. With clear past-life memories of being a military colonel who got eaten alive when a little disagreement got out of hand in front of the Cyber Shaman, he bears quite a grudge against the rather familiar people in the Embryon and wants them to die in front of him on their knees and begging for mercy. He runs his tribe in a military manner where his men are known to chant things like "Brutes are number one! Hell yeah!" and everyone wears blue paint splashed as camo. And sunglasses. Unique in that Varin is one of the few people with strong enough memories to have a good idea of what is wrong in that world, and to bargain with Angel to try to get out of the Junkyard, he is absolutely determined to beat down the uppity Embryon and go on to 'Nirvana' himself, dragging that black-haired devil Sera along with him. His demon form is an invisible purple squirrel with two tails, which can transform into a zombie space-suit.
Jenna Angel
Status: Available as a counselor.
About: SPOILERS IN HERE, ARR. Jenna Angel is a scientist who used to belong to an ecological organization and, following the death of her boyfriend, wants to destroy the world. Physically a hermaphrodite viable to the point of bearing a child with herself (ANYONE WANT TO GUESS WHO THE CHILD IS), Angel gender-identifies female and lives as a woman. The lead Technical Director of the Karma Society in the real world, Angel is responsible for such important scientific discoveries as: There is a god in the sun, the world is just made up of data, and people can be turned into demons that devour each other by a simple virus. A young child is being disobedient about hacking the data of life and communicating with a corrupt god? It can be lobotomy tiem nao.
Angel hates you. She hates your brother. She hates your parents. She thinks you are ignorant and deserve to die after falling into the chaos of your most primal nature. She does so out of deep sadness about the unfair death of her lover, but nevertheless, she still really hates you. Though she'll hate you with a smile while assuring you that she's here to help you. Also, she's really hot. And wants to turn you into a demon. I would eat babies for an Angel.
Fred
Status: Available as a camper.
About: Fred is the narrator of the second DDS game and a perfectly human kid who hangs out with a bunch of crazy cannibals, running around the city and helping do things like infiltrate the city's power plant. He teaches Serph many important things about life, like "how handshakes work", and generally thinks the Embryon are awesome people. Mostly upbeat and inclined to joke around, he's still faced with a hell of a lot of mortality at a young age and goes through occasional periods where he doubts his own inner strength and wishes he could grow up faster so he could cope with things better. Although he's Roland's adoptive son, Fred takes to Gale as a father figure, and learns the sort of strength and honour from Gale that will let him always take the right path, and help others take it as well. Though when it comes down to it, he's a kid who still wants to be involved in the cool stuff to the point that he doesn't always consider his own safety.
Schroedinger
Status: Available as a... whichever? He's a cat.
About: IT'S THAT CAT. Schroedinger is a cat who first shows up in the Junkyard -- a mysterious action as cats don't exist in the Junkyard, and everyone who sees him is very surprised to see a cat, and also surprised that they know what cats are. Schroedinger wears bells shapes like two teethy heads, and has a tendency to show up at vital moments, such as AIs awakening to sentience, people meeting Sera, and people dying. (When they die, his bells ring.) He also occasionally shows up to make a point, or to help people break out of prison. Because he's soooo cuuuute, who could keep a door shut with a cat thiiiiis cuuuute behind it.
Schroedinger is secretly an enlightened floating hermaphrodite who is guiding everyone along the path to enlightenment. He manages to keep from talking throughout most of the first game, which is good because when he does open his muzzle to talk to people he has a tendency to ramble a bit about things like the nature of the universe and humanity's place within it. He's also great for catching up on canon, as he's sort of one with the universe and can let you in on some of the backstory, as he does to Serph in canon.
Multimedia
Serph was awesome enough to upload most of the video scenes from the DDS games FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE. :D I highly recommend them, there's good quality in these ones.
They can be found
here!
She ALSO was so totally awesome as to up a bunch of music from it. See below for links:
Danger - Etro Anime - The opening song to DDS1.
Alive - Etro Anime - The opening song to DDS2.
See the Sound - the Etro Anime Album - Other music by the band!
BGM comes in FOUR, count them, FOUR discs. All pretty awesome, they also include fantastic track names such as "Hideout of the Chickens", "Meaaaaaaat! Processing Plant", and my personal favourite, "This Isn't Very Interesting Either."
Disc 1Disc 2Disc 3Disc 4 So in short: App us our cannibals! Also, play the game. For those over on the NA side, it's a bit harder to get because it's out of print, but you can sometimes find copies for rent or sale in gamestores, and it's always up on ebay (usually you can get both games for between $60-90 total). For the people over on the AUS side, it's still in print and in stores. Pick it up o/
