I hate 'Watchmen' ...

I've been spending quite a bit of time with 'Watchmen' recently, reading and watching, and though the execution is excellent in both cases the sentiment is vile.

Such a failure of hope is despicable in every way.

I think you're mis-reading the intention.

Watchmen -- as a graphic novel -- was written as a deconstruction of the Superhero genre of comics, particularly as they were in the 1980s. The movie was created as a relatively-faithful adaptation of the graphic novel.

Ultimately, the message is the same old cautionary tale we've seen many times before: the road to hell is paved with good intentions, especially when you let the ends justify the means.

At the end of the day, none of it is particularly relevant once we'd gotten out of the 1980s, except -as- a deconstruction of the superhero cliches.
