Preliminary costume planning

An (admittedly not exhaustive) reread of various of Tamora Pierce's books not having come up with anyone in "contemporary" Tortall that I have both a vague physical resemblance to and any particular interest in dressing up as, my current plan is to come up with a Beka costume, and to see if I can reinvent* my Sandry costume from Hallowe'en . . . Beka's arm-guards are leather. And each one has four strips of metal trim that are actually thin knives. I'm not quite sure how that works.

I'm guessing that the gorget is leather, but I didn't notice one way or the other in Bloodhound. Possibly Terrier would say, when she gets her gear.

(She does have armor, too, by the way, for her back and chest (and maybe arms?). But she leaves it off sometimes because it's hot. And then people usually try to stab her (which isn't a spoiler; that's just the way life is, especially if you work in law enforcement).)

I actually like what she's wearing on the Bloodhound cover a lot more than the Terrier cover. Here, take a look.

Well, if the strips go along the arm, rather than around it, probably about the same way knives hidden in sleeves work. (Details are good! This way I don't have to make them up!)

Terrier might say, but I didn't write it down and don't have the book with me.

(I'm not sure if she had the armor in the first book, or if she did whether she ever wore it--I remember there being kind of a fuss made about "Hurry up and get the girl a gorget before someone slits her throat", which sort of sounds like that was the appropriate standard of protection. And yes, I will agree that's not a spoiler.)

I'm not sure about the actual description of the gorget, but from a nagging memory and from what I know about gorgets: it should be either metal (plate of some sort, not chain) or metal laid over leather.
