“To Kayneth who's been born into aristocracy, there's nothing he can't stand more than originally common things being dressed up in fancy outfits to appear falsely aristocratic.” -Act 5
Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald is the heir of the Archibald family with nine generations of magus lineage. He is a highly esteemed lecturer (abit quite young to hold such a position) and, though arranged, he is engaged to the daughter of the principal, Sola-Ui Nuada-Re Sophia-Ri. Being born to Nobility, Kayneth looks down on those he deems ‘lesser’, be it commons, technology, or anything at all. Known as a ‘prodigy’ since his childhood, and nothing went against his will, all of these 'facts' made the honors he received though his life seem matter-of-fact; his self-confidence in believing that there literally was nothing in this world he cannot achieve with his power was not unfounded.
”His mercury should be a weapon that takes in Gandr shots, deflects magical swords, and breaks through supernatural fire, ice and lightning. It should be a craft that makes whichever magus who hates him marvel, revere, and at the same time arrive at death.” -Act 7
Due to such beliefs on his confidence, Kayneth did not feel the slightest feeling of satisfaction or accomplishment prior to the war, since all was merely life's 'inevitable result' to him. Thus, when an impossible ‘accident’ occurs, it was something he will not/cannot tolerate. Kayneth who had led a life without defeat-- anything that does not meet his expectations is not allowed.
And many such ‘accidents’ happened during the Holy Grail War.
Kayneth is a contradiction in himself; while he’s paranoid, possessive, obsessive, and jealous, one of his strengths is his ability to push all feelings aside and switch into his role as a Magus to do what must be done. He looses sight of this later on. His battle tactics say much of his character, as well. Choosing to hide himself from afar and remain unseen shows him as cautious man. Instead of charging into battle, he fortifies his defense (the extent of his hotel can be seen in Act 5), and his Mystic Code being Volumen Hydragyrum highlights this fact with its automatic defense and abilities.
Waver Valvet, his student, had stolen his original artifact, thus rendering Kayneth’s plan on summoning Alexander the Great useless. Working out a partner-system with Sola-Ui Nuada-Re Sophia-Ri to summon Lancer had been his next logical step. Unable to do anything about this directly, he stores his wrath for Waver to deal with when he was to meet the boy head on for battle and lashes out at Lancer. While this partnership may be strong, the dynamics between them are tense. By allowing Sola to belittle, humiliate him and his pride says enough how much he cares about her. It was unheard of for Kayneth to allow anyone to walk all over him. Sola, Kayneth’s Teacher Department head of Eulyphis’s Daughter, was the only exception. It was not even due to such a prestigious title, nor the the union of two noble houses, but merely because Sola is the only woman he loved ever since their first meeting. Having figured out how to to split the command seal and prana supply, Kayneth and Sola are a two-person team Master; that alone speaks of how much he trusts her. At her backing off at one word from Lancer, something that she’d never do for him, have started a chain affect that will ultimately lead to his demise.
Between Waver who interfered with his victory and Lancer who was unable to bring him victory, the latter enrages him more. By summoning Lancer to speak/interrogate him face to face to better observe the most minute changes in his expression, one can see Kayneth’s paranoia and obsession through the conversation. Lancer’s battle proved his Bravery and Finesse in how he dealt with other Servants. While Kayneth values both traits, Bravery and Finesse without results merely enrages him. During his conversations with Lancer, who swore to “win the War for the Holy Grail” for him and that he himself am not aiming for the Grail already set off alarms in his mind. Then after the first battle, Lancer swore again “To defeat Saber” showed an even lesser goal, seeing as obtaining the Holy Grail meant defeating all Servants. Once he finds an inconsistency, regardless how small, he will latch onto it, as seen with his interactions with Lancer. Being this prideful in knowing his position in the world, Lancer’s answer as a Servant was, in his mind, inconsistent therefore untrustworthy.
By lashing out at Lancer, who was readily available and wouldn’t go against his word and tearing up Waver’s research paper also speaks volumes on his character. He acknowledges the fact that being angry at a person not in front of him is pointless; he is very realistic, calm, and brutal. He keeps a calm and collected mask, as expected of one with his standing even when faced with rage. He rarely allows feelings other then neutrality to show, as seen in his battle with Kiritsugu. In conclusion, Kayneth is arrogant with the abilities to back up his confidence. His prideful, analytical mind is nonexistent when it comes to Sola, and facing Lancer his paranoia is at its worst, and expectation high.

[It comes to no surprise that Kayneth had kept silent upon his arrival and spent a few hours gathering his bearings-- being plucked mid-battle along with the sudden loss of his Mystic Code was not quite the welcome befitting of one his rank, scouted by the gods-- aside. Being separated from a Victory close at hand and his fiancee was not doing his blood pressure any favors, either. However for the moment, he will keep his silence about these ‘Gods’; for one, he’d require more proof then the letter (much too simple for his tastes. Reality Marble, perhaps? Even if he’d be willing to believe such a tale, Kayneth Archibald El-Melloi does not take kindly to those with the worrying ability to keep him in the dark), and the main reason--for the first time in his life, he cannot access his magic circuits.
Outwardly calm only because he’s managed to push panic aside to deal with later, he turns his attention to the bracelet. To announce his presence, as he would have in any other situation, or not?
Finally activating the bracelet with no difficulty to address others ‘chosen’ by the gods.]
The ninth head of the Archibald house, Kayneth El-Melloi, seeks audience with those in the House of Odin.
[Weeding out potential threats, and find those worthy of such a selection would be difficult but much needed process. Loathe as he would admit in working together with others, even he knew when his pride must suffer for his survival. Conflicting emotions aside, Kayneth is anxious on better knowing this ‘Asgard’, since--knowledge is half the battle. He frowned. ]
As for the others- I wish to compile our information on the situation at hand.

"Scalp!"
As the door collapsed before his Mystic Code, Kayneth’s mood can not be worse. Forced to leave his beloved at a miserable excuse of a warehouse was not one his pride will tolerate, for it was ill befitting of her rank. Simple bad luck; a string of unfortunate accidents. That must be it, for there was none that have the capacity to measure of up him, Lord El-Melloi.
"The ninth head of the Archibald house, Kayneth El-Melloi, asks for an audience!”
Even so, Kayneth was forced to acknowledge the ingenuity of his enemy’s move; to take out his base of operations and bypassing the absolute defense he’d created-- perhaps that was the only way. Pushing irritation aside, --was his purpose of joining the Heavenly Feel not of pitting himself against powerful Magi worthy of respect-- however, he was reassessing his opinions as he made his way to the estate up ahead, shattering illusions and evading armature diversions. Petty traps and apprentice-level spells were hardly befitting of one his rank, his prestige. Commoners masquerading as competent opponents only furthered his ire. Fueled by such circumstance, he can feel his patience at its end as he readies himself for battle.
“Magus of the Einsbern! For the Holy Grail that you seek, betting your life and pride, come out to meet me!"
