Things were beginning to fall somewhat into place. Ryou was taking care of him. Ayame and the child were healthy. A message on his comm device told him Arietta was home safely. An older message from Otogi reassured him that Merry was happy and protected.
There only remained Emmeline and... what was left of Malik.
He'd been pointed to the room his sometimes-fiancee was staying in. At the door he hesitated. What right did he have to take her back, anyway? She'd asked for him, but... did he deserve to be her guardian now?
Not that he should be asking these questions. He should be asking if he'd survive the encounter with Marik he was sure was coming. If Emmeline would survive it.
If she really would smile for him again as she'd promised to.
The pressure was building, pressing him down until he couldn't even move his hand to open the door. It was impossible. He couldn't win. He couldn't save anyone. There were two people on the other side of the thin layer of wood who held special places in his suddenly overflowing heart. He couldn't save either of them.

It cut him, like a sudden realization of a long-known fact often does. Blinking at the world in a faint painful daze, Cain lifted his hand and pushed open the door.
