It was the ball sort. The new one is a laser mouse.

Did you clean the little rollers inside the mouse? ;) With the ball mouse, they need unscrewing at the bottom every so often and the rollers inside having the dirt scraped off them :p

Yes, I never have dirty rollers in my mice as I clean them obsessively. I can't stand the bumpy feel of dirty rollers it drives me mad. The roller itself was not making the pointer move even though it was rotating properly.
