Nino literally jumped off the bus and ran speeding through the neighborhood, not minding how much his big blue duffel weighed on his shoulders. God knows how long his legs have been waiting for this moment, for during the whole ride he could not keep them still. Hah, why am I so giddy like this? With a huge grin on his face and his heart beating faster by the second, he fiddled with his keys and slammed the door open. “Tadaima!” Even if it wasn’t his apartment, it sure felt like his own home.
Out of breath, he dropped his bag by the doormat and gave a quick look over the living room. Empty. The art room. Empty. Bedroom. Not a soul. Klang! Nino turned his head and rushed to the source of the sound. The kitchen.
He was surprised to find nobody in the kitchen as well. That is, not until he peered over the counter to see Ohno sprawled on the kitchen floor, face covered in white grains of powder, wearing an apron, looking defeated.
“I come home and you decide to turn into a sugar-covered donut for me, Oh-chan?” Nino smirked. “What a way to welcome me back.”
Finally realizing the situation, Ohno quickly stood up. “Oooh! Oohh! Nino-chan! Okaeri!” Ohno managed to say through the surprised smile plastered across his face. Nino wanted to pinch the chubby cheeks that stood out more due to its white powdery state. “When did you get here? I didn’t hear the door or anything.”
Nino grunted. “Maybe because you were too busy with your... cooking. If you can call it that.” He raised his brows at the mess his friend made. “Just what do you think you’re doing? It’s a shipwreck in here! And what is that white thing all over your face? It’s in your hair too.” Nino reached over to Ohno and ruffled his short spikes a bit. “Have you been doing coke?”
“Right. I’ve been so depressed I did coke all the while you were gone,” Ohno exaggerated with a straight face. “Haha. I was making a meron pan for you.”
Nino blushed a little but couldn’t help chuckling. “You and your obsessive baking. I already had one at the airport! Now make me your chahan specialty so we can have dinner already. I’m famished,” the brat commanded.

They both leaned back at the couch, side by side, beer in hand. Two empty plates and two pairs of feet were set on the coffee table in front of them. “Aaaah, that was good,” Nino sighed in relief. “Now that’s definitely something worth coming back to Japan to. You sure can’t find that in America. ”
Ohno sipped his beer and turned to look at the younger man. “How was it though? New York, huh?”
“It was… blah. So wrong of me to go on a vacation to a city that never sleeps, when all I do on my days off is sleep. I should have known. Besides, I missed you.” I really did, didn’t I?
“Yeah, I missed you, too.”
Now it was Nino’s turn to look at Ohno. “You did?”
“Of course. It felt strange winning every single Mario Kart game because you weren’t there to play with me. I was glad to be able to go fishing without anyone yelling at me, but that made me miss you even more. It was quiet without you.”
This time Nino really blushed in crimson. “You did…?”
Ohno nodded. “You’re my best friend. And I haven’t seen or heard from you in six weeks. You emo. You could have at least emailed me saying you got there safely. Not that I had to worry about someone like you, haha.”
Nino didn’t know if it was the alcohol pushing him, or if it was just about time he finally made a move. After a few seconds of hesitation, he leaned in and gave Ohno a small peck on the lips, then quickly drew back. Almost like he was surprised himself at what he just did. “I… Sorry… That was…”
But Nino’s breath caught when he felt Ohno’s hand tug at the back of his head and pulled him in for a full kiss. They stayed like that for a while, grasping the moment. “Don’t apologize,” whispered Ohno when they finally broke apart.
Nino grinned and adjusted himself to Ohno’s lap for a more comfortable position. Then he wrapped his arms around Ohno’s neck and slanted his head to close the distance between them. How long have I been waiting for this? Ohno’s lips were full and perfect. They combined beautifully with Nino’s thin ones. It was their first time together so things got a bit messy, but that didn’t slow them down. They kept kissing for a while without bothering to come up for air.
But Nino suddenly stopped them. “Is this right?”
A silence as they looked at one another.
“Wait, what are we doing!?”
“Relax, Nino-chan,” Ohno calmed him down reassuringly, patting his shoulders. “I’ve been wanting this just as long as you have…”
“No!” Nino got up from the couch in fury. Wait, what am I saying? “You’re my friend. Well, at least up until ten minutes ago, you were my friend. What happened to you? What’s taken over you?”
Ohno looked confused for a few seconds. He almost looked uncertain how to respond. “You’re the one who started it.”
Nino stared down at the floor as he realized it himself. I’m the one who started it… He was embarrassed. “I… Sorry… Ah, it’s the beer…” Why am I so flustered today? I’m the one who usually has the way with words…
Much to Nino’s surprise, Ohno smiled. “Do I need to tell you one more time that you don’t need to apologize?” he said in a soft voice. “And please don’t blame the beer. You’re not drunk. You’re just scared.”
“I’m w-what?”
“You’re scared.”
“Of what? What should I be scared of? I don’t have anything to be scared of.”
“See? You’re stammering again.”
Ohno got up from the couch and gently put his hands on Nino’s cheeks. As much as his head tells him to, Nino finds himself not backing away. “I’ve known you for fourteen years now. I know you, okay, Nino? And I know this is new for us. I know you’re afraid things will go wrong and not the way you expect it to be and what if our friendship falls apart? What if problems occur and I leave and you get hurt and everything won’t change back into place? I know you’re scared. I’m scared too. But what do you say we be scared together?”
Taken aback, all Nino could do was look Ohno in the eyes, speechless and flabbergasted. A terrified expression he was putting on indeed. So maybe he was wearing his heart on his sleeve. Either that or Ohno just really does know him that well.
“Okay. Let me try that one more time,” Ohno chuckled lightly, realizing how paralyzed the younger man was. “Nino. What do you say we give it a try? You and me? Will you be mine?”
Nino didn’t realize he was holding his breath until he finally let it out. Oh, what the hell. He gave in. “…yeah. Sure,” Nino smiled at his own words. “Sure.” He liked the sound of it.
Ohno grinned big and bear-hugged Nino to express his gratitude for the respond. “Hahaha, I knew it. See!”
Embarassed, Nino quickly pulled apart. “What are you so happy about!? You know this just means you have to cook for me more often, and put up with my snoring more often, and you know by default this means you can’t go fishing because you have to spend time with me! And you’d have to let me win at Mario Kart game we play, well not that I’ll win either way anyway, and…”
Ohno just laughed as he patiently listened to his boyfriend’s rant about how their life was going to be spent together. In truth, he was just happy he finally had the chance to tell Nino how he felt about him. Even better, he also had the chance to confirm that Nino also felt the same way.
