Rotten bananas cure cancer

This is the first, or perhaps only, item in an occasional series on internet memes, in which I see a meme and spend no more than a few minutes investigating it.

Today's meme is that eating overripe bananas cures cancer, a claim that, to my knowledge, has not even appeared in the Daily Mail yet.

I suspect that what the Mail has in those couple of paragraphs is roughly correct, although it rather defeats the object of eating bananas in the first place.
