I seem to recall that putting some empty non-stick pans over high heat can cause the coating to degrade and give off hazardous fumes.
I might try a good old cast iron skillet. It'll take longer to heat up, but should pop at least as well once it's up to temperature.

I had forgotten about that issue with non-stick. I normally don't do any high heat cooking.
