Yoochun whistled to himself as he idly tapped his fingers on the counter. The queue today was long as always. He didn’t dislike his job but it could get so boring at times, standing outdoors under the sweltering heat from the summer sun.
It was incredibly unexciting to watch the silly humans in the queue chattering and jostling around, getting hyped up about reaching the front to take on the “coolest rollercoaster in the world, oh my God!” Then again it was quite entertaining to observe the expressions on the little shorties’ faces when they were denied from getting on the ride because they didn’t meet the minimum height requirement. Once in awhile there were also some giggly pretty ladies he’d spy on and maybe flirt with when they came closer.
And then there was someone who stood out. A very cute young man who was always alone, for nearly a week now.
---
The first time Yoochun spotted the young man, he figured that he was lonely. The young man was staring blankly into space and only moved forward because the swarm of people behind shouted and shoved rudely at him. It was a strange sight to Yoochun because most people who came to take the ULTRA-MEGA-SUPERFASTSCARYANDEXCITING rollercoaster ride were in high spirits. Although most of the people who took the ride came in happy pairs or joyful groups, those who came solo were usually quite enthusiastic as well. However, this young man was apparently feeling down. He wasn’t frowning obviously but the forlorn look in his eyes clearly demonstrated his unhappy emotions.
When the young man had finally trudged to the front and climbed aboard, Yoochun did his routine final-check down the row, glancing at the grinning people to see if they had been paired up properly. Anyone who came alone or chose to sit alone would be given an enormous teddy bear. This was due to the nature of the rollercoaster - there were extremely sharp turns and steep falls throughout the ride and the climax was an ULTRA-MEGA-SUPERFASTSCARYANDEXCITING three-hundred-and-sixty degree turn which left the riders yelling and shrieking in both fear and excitement. Having a partner meant that the riders could rely on and balance each other, eliminating the danger of being flung out of the ride and dying a ridiculously painful and stupid death. Partner-less people would have the life-sized bear to hold on to and for maintaining support and stability.
The young man was, of course, sitting alone. He was pretty much in his own world, still looking miserable and staring blankly at nothing.
“Hello there, sir. So you’re riding alone sir?” Yoochun started his usual formalities.
The young man seemed to have snapped out of his world and jumped up with a start. He nodded at Yoochun despondently. Yoochun stared at the young man, now fiddling with his messy tresses nervously, looking at the happy pairs merrily anticipating the adventure of their lives. Somehow this evoked some form of sympathy on Yoochun’s part. A little voice inside his head told him that the young man deserved some sincere kindness and desperately needed some cheering up.
“I’ll give you this teddy bear then for your safety. Have a safe ride… and smile!” said Yoochun gently, placing the white fluffy soft toy next to the young man.
The young man perked up and looked intently at Yoochun. The expression on his face became quite unreadable.
Yoochun didn’t know if the young man felt any better, but still, he had to continue with his routine which unfortunately could not include cheering unhappy customers up.
He carefully pushed down the lever on the controller machine and large steel bars propped down in front of the riders, securing them tightly. Giving a (hopefully) friendly wave and big grin to the young man whose eyes were still dazed, Yoochun proceeded with pushing down the larger lever that started the ULTRA-MEGA-SUPERFASTSCARYANDEXCITING ride.
---
Yoochun hadn’t thought much of that encounter with the young man. But the next day, he was there at the same time.
He was alone again. This time his face exuded a cheery sort of exuberance and he was humming softly to himself as he took his seat in the rollercoaster.
“Hello there, sir. So you’re riding alone sir?”
When Yoochun handed him the teddy bear, both corners of his lips curved upwards into an undeniably happy smile. Yoochun decided that his sweet smile was a little too cute for a guy’s.
“Thank you,” said the young man, sounding positively happy now. For some reason, his face reddened and he quickly looked away.
Yoochun would have preferred to, perhaps, have a little chat with the young man and discover the reason for the change in his attitude, but still, he had to continue with his routine which unfortunately could not include chatting up cute and contented customers.
He carefully pushed down the lever on the controller machine and large steel bars propped down in front of the riders, securing them tightly. Giving a (unquestionably) friendly wave and big grin to the young man whose eyes were now twinkling, Yoochun proceeded with pushing down the larger lever that started the ULTRA-MEGA-SUPERFASTSCARYANDEXCITING ride.
The wheels of the rollercoaster started clattering as it accelerated slowly from rest. Yoochun found his eyes wandering to the young man who was using his right hand to hold the colossal teddy’s arm. He was now leaning on the teddy bear pretty comfortably and Yoochun couldn’t help but think, “So cute…” as he sauntered back to the counter to mind the never-ending queue.
---
This went on for the rest of the week.
Yoochun would steal glances at the young man standing alone in the queue. With each day he looked more and more joyful. Yoochun got rather used to his presence and looked forward to skimming his eyes through the crowds to observe his endearing little actions and expressions. How could a guy be this cute? His features weren’t exactly sharp but put together they formed a rather adorable face which increased in cuteness as he grew happier and happier day by day. And the way he waddled happily and hopped aboard the little carriage was so amusing… He always grinned ever so shyly whenever Yoochun gave him his teddy partner. Sometimes he even hugged the toy while on the ride, Yoochun noticed. Didn’t such a cute person have somebody - a friend or a family member - to visit the amusement park with? Why was he always alone?
---
Monday was Yoochun’s day-off, meaning he didn’t have to report to the amusement park. He was supposed to meet up with some old friends for some catching up but these arrangements were suddenly postponed. Yoochun found that he had absolutely nothing to do in his boring apartment but vacuum his living room, wash the smelly fish tanks and organise his underwear drawer. Somehow he didn’t feel like doing any of those mundane chores. Somehow he was rather curious about whether the cute young man would be alone at the park again. Somehow he found himself putting on his coat and walking rather briskly towards his workplace. If the young man was there… it would have been an entire week of visiting the amusement park to take the ULTRA-MEGA-SUPERFASTSCARYANDEXCITING ride alone with only the teddy bear and this was so… cutely baffling.
---
The young man was there but he wasn’t standing in line; he was merely wandering around the region near the counter, watching as the customers were swiftly taken up, down and around on the ULTRA-MEGA-SUPERFASTSCARYANDEXCITING rollercoaster. His eyes had lost their sparkle. The sense of cheeriness he had radiated from the previous days seemed to have evaporated and he was back to his glum state from the first day that Yoochun had noticed him.
Yoochun pondered the situation, wondering if he should perhaps walk up and initiate a conversation.
“Hi,” he whispered, tapping lightly on the young man’s shoulder.
The young man spun around in shock, widening his eyes upon seeing Yoochun’s face.
“Hello,” he replied. His eyes gradually regained their sparkle from the previous days as he stared bashfully at Yoochun.
“I’m sorry for being so nosy, and I don’t mean to sound rude… But why are you unhappy? Why are you always here alone?” inquired Yoochun, genuinely interested and concerned for the young man.
The young man didn’t say anything but he pointed to the part timer manning the ULTRA-MEGA-SUPERFASTSCARYANDEXCITING rollercoaster who was now handing the gigantic teddy to a customer sitting alone.
“I…I…I didn’t know that was actually part of your routine to give lonely people like me those cute fluffy bears,” he murmured, bowing his head in slight embarrassment.
A wave of comprehension hit Yoochun. “So that’s why… so cute…”
The two young men stood silently for a moment, gazing at the scene before them. They watched and listened as the rollercoaster sped up; customers clung on to their partners (teddy bear, for the solo rider) for their dear lives and made hysterical screams of fear, excitement and joy? and then… Yoochun knew what he wanted to do.
He took the young man by the hand and pointed meaningfully to the raging ULTRA-MEGA-SUPERFASTSCARYANDEXCITING rollercoaster.
“Will you let me be your teddy bear today?”
THE END.
(actually ERINASTRID is going to write an alternate ending, but this is my ending)
Hope you like it and comments are really appreciated and loved! I didn’t state clearly that the young man was Junsu but I guess you can tell?
[This is my first YOOSU oneshot so I really hope you enjoy it!]
I was sort of inspired by a Korean programme called Sponge. There's a dangerous but fun ride in some Korean amusement park where people who come alone are given really big teddies for balance. I was so desperate to read YOOSU fics so I tried writing a YOOSU based on that. <33
Once again, thanks alot for reading! ^_^
