The ongoing story of Bongsu's immigration: I believe we have only one more piece of paperwork to file, the N-400, which having been approved will enable her to make an appointment for the civics exam and (same day) swearing in as a naturalized American citizen. So that's exciting ( Read more... )

This sucks, bro. My boss's boss is British, but has American citizenship. He's constantly harping on how misguided America is, so I once asked him why he asked for citizenship (knowing full well that his wife is American). His answer was that he was sick of being treated as a second-class citizen by the Immigration authorities. He rattled off a long list of tribulations they had subjected him to over the years. A verbatim quote: "They treat you like the scum of the earth."

Definitely a template to avoid in your own career...

Hmm. I don't think I would go that far. This is actually the first time I've thought anyone really fouled up in terms of customer service. Yeah, it's been a constant headache, but that's mostly just the way the process is set up when it comes into contact with all the other things going on in life (from becoming an FSO to moving from Japan to Korea to Duck to Rockville). Anyway, even today I didn't get the impression that the lady thought we were scum; more that she just couldn't be bothered to mitigate the bad news by trying to have a helpful attitude ( ... )
