We went today to Theodore Roosevelt Island, a first for both of us. It was very nice. We walked around and communed with a bit of nature, although the frequent airplanes coming in to National and the not-too-distant traffic on the GW Parkway helped us keep the feeling of being safely connected to this cluster of millions of people choosing to live ( Read more... )

With my completionist obsessions, I always meant to go to TR Island, but I can't recall if I ever did (I suspect I didn't). New York City has its own sort of equivalent -- Randall's Island, a large island at the confluence of the East River, the Harlem River, and the Long Island Sound. It's a big park, and is connected to the other landmasses by footbridges. But also by the Triborough Bridge. So, again, you probably can't forget that you're near a city. Haven't been to that island yet, either...

Your dad and I went there a few times when we lived in Alexandria. It's an odd place, I would NOT want to be there alone. It feels like a perfect setting for a serial killer to murder victim #22. Maybe it's the dictator-like TR statue.

If you want some real fun, your sister used to ride her bike and lie on the ground at Gravelly Point near where the planes fly in to National Airport , so she could feel the vortex that occurs when the jets are landing.

Late to the party, I know, but... can you please explain/describe the vortex effect? I've never heard of this before.

Hadn't heard of Gravelly Point either. Now I see there are two Potomac parks I need to go to...
