Goddamn, why does the video room not just use Windows? Yes, it's a sucky OS, but things actually play on it.

Or maybe they need to make sure to assign "staffers who actually know Windows" to the video room?

Okay, all my forum posts keep getting eaten by the Magfest website as spam, but I posted the above comment in the forums, along with Option C: Assign a Linux Expert to Jack's Spackler team, to troubleshoot stuff like this.

I wouldn't be surprised if mentioning Windows in the Magfest forums triggers spam filters on its own. I ran vid room last year with two Win XP netbooks, a DVD player, and an external HDD. It didn't run perfectly, but problems that came up were super easy to fix and schedule deviations were scant. Even still, I've given up on the idea of convincing a hardcore Linuxhead that Windows can be better than Linux in some situations, like getting non-programmers to run a video player.

Paul and I used to joke about how video room was the easiest thing to do at Mag that somehow managed to get unnecessarily complicated every year, and that's pretty much the gist of it.

LOL, that would be hysterical.

Think this has a chance of changing now that Brendan isn't in charge? I'm sure nobody there *loves* Windows, but come on. This is "definition of insanity" territory. They keep doing it the same way, and it keeps breaking. Maybe it is time for doing things a different way.

Actually, my "spackler Linux geek" suggestion is the one most likely to work/be accepted by people.

You're probably right. Really it depends on what Vicki wants to do, since vid room is hers now. Brendan may still push for his system to be used since it allows him to effortlessly copy guest materials (the DVD-ROM is programmed to "play" a DVD by ripping the ISO and playing that instead), but any headstrong department head with the right resources can switch things up if they want (and have enough sense) to.
