No need to feel ashamed - the lj cut is not easy to master. It took me quite a few tries before I got it when I started out on LJ.
As for your post - it looks like you did the same thing. You used the opening code and the closed it right after. Like I said in comment, you don't really have to use the close (/lj-cut) code at all (unless you have more text after the pics you want to show on the front page). Try it again that way and it should be fine.
