I miss those variety shows! They were such the best. I think I learned more Japanese from watching TV all the time than I did anywhere else (it was like the movie Splash, except I wasn't a mermaid).
As for teaching - I have no tips for elementary ed. I guess just make sure to give kids ample time to think and come up with an answer, even if it feels like they totally don't know and are just waiting for you to tell them. Inquiry! Although... not sure how accommodating the Japanese school system would be to that method. Seems to be a lot of memorize and repeat there...
