Tip leaving etiquette

My deep thinking brother posted his thoughts on tipping at restuarants yesterday. I left him a comment, but had more to say. If you'd like to see his post click here.  But I would like to comment further on what is appropriate for a tip.  Do you just draw a random dollar value from your imagination and call it "the standard" for all tips no matter

Everyone in a group should leave their own tip based on how well satisfied they are with the service. Sometimes waiters give better service to certain individuals in a group for whatever reason, which would leave those left out with a good reason for a poor tip. But, yes, a tip should be left by everyone regardless of what anyone else at their table left.
