Dude, gross.

Even setting questions of ethics or responsibility aside, it is increasingly and glaringly obvious that the current demands in the western world for meat and thus livestock are not in any way sustainable. See nine million semi-embarrasingly strident posts to this journal, for exa ( Read more... )

Gross, indeed. Pisses me the fuck off, and I eat meat. Occasionally. I've gotten to the point where I only eat free-range organic (and, if possible) locally produced meat, and I only eat it twice a week, tops. It's healthier. It's cheaper. It's better for everybody. One would think this would be an easier pill to swallow for the general public, than, say, total vegetarianism, but most people look at me like I'm crazy when I explain "responsible omnivorism" to them.

So, the South Park guys weren't too far off, when they had Cartman use stem cells to build his own Shakeys. Yeah, even if they're not the same stem cells, come the fuck on!

We've been talking a lot about the concept of "closure" in my class: once the mechanisms of an object are understood, it then becomes "black boxed", and then people generally forget about how things work. Our culture has become so black boxed that it seems a dwindling few actually stop to think of the impact their actions take on the rest of the world. Grrrr.

re: stem cells, I can't wait until we have a non- less stupid president.

re: "closure," yep, I think that sums it up pretty well.

Huh, another bizarro meat scheme (I've been meaning to write about all the fun filled meat news lately). I was surprise by the lack of response to the cloned meat thing...yes, even though I'm to understand most of the cloned animals will be used for breeding- I mean, of course the uh, 'organic community' (you know what it mean) will be against it; but I really the thought the Christian would freak (cause when they get all up in arm- more people listen)...maybe they would even team-up...ooh, scary. I mean, as a Xtian, who believes its wrong of science to play God- is it okay to eat the offspring of a cloned animal?...and is it just me, or does it seem like since the early '00, noone talks about genetically modified food anymore (when are we going to get labels on that)?. Also, can Buddhists eat 'meat-sheets'?...

Ahh! So much food news- a busy year for beef in '06: The immigrant bust; cloned thing; Fast Food Nation movie; and the whole U.N. report business...also, there was a little Austrian movie called Our Daily Bread" about food ( ... )

Aaaaaah! Totally worth it. Are they singing the Thriller lyrics? I assume so, but it's kind of better if it's a different song...

Also, yeah--why aren't people worried about GMOs anymore? It's just going to keep getting crazier, whether anyone's paying attention or not...I'm generally pro-science (suprising, I know) but in this case, their are so many easier, humane-er, less expensive options...if people actually think about what they eat.

Also also, regarding The Jungle (and Fast Food Nation) have we really come all that far (in terms of labor abuse esp. w/ non-citizens, safety, blah blah)?
