i recommend taking some time to page through apartmenttherapy.com's city pages. they are full of brilliant and fun ideas for wall treatments (although you'll have to sift...it's design ideas for all places). one idea i saw recently was to take a wall like that and make it look like giant speaker cabinets...

even painting it the same color as the surrounding wall will make it look like a Martha Stewart media center . . . like you put up molding just to accentuate your tv and cabinet.

how many roomies do you have now?

that is true, but I kinda need to hide the fact that I didn't mud or tape or anything. It's a total rig job.

well, its tough to tell, but you could paint it the room color, then go around the edges with some inexpensive white molding, and then quarter the square with similar white molding . . . may be straying a bit from Martha land, but I am only an engineer.
