That's great - What are you using for a grinder? I sold my crappy system last year and bought a bladder press to handle the larger volume my orchard is producing, but now I don't have a grinder... I want to build a scratter but am not sure I'll have time.

I don't have a lathe but I'd like to get or make a cylinder of wood and screw some wood screws almost all the way in. I'd build a little funnel up top out of plywood. I picked up a free exercise bike on the side of the road the other day and I'm thinking of rigging it so that the belt will drive the grinder cylinder.

The most practical solution that I have for this years crop is much more simple: I'll probably buy a new flat nosed shovel and food grade bucket, fill the bucket with apples and chop them up with the shovel. I did that the other day with some apples begging to spoil on the ground and made the chickens fresh apple sauce in about two minutes. Between batches I'll put the shovel in a bucket of iodine solution.

Another grinder option that seems pretty good is to mount a new garbage disposal unit in a frame of 2x4s with an output pipe draining into a bucket.

That's exactly what I used before. Works great, but gets tedious if you have a lot of fruit to process. I made a pusher - sort of a wooden pestle that just barely fit through the throat of the disposal - to ram the apples through better. That really helps.
