[ There’s a soft click as Esmeralda switches the communicator on, and a few moments of silence as she contemplates it wonderingly - and admiringly! She has never seen technology like this before, but she is completely fascinated. ]
If the light is on, you can see me and hear my voice, right?
[ She examines the device, murmuring to herself sotto

There is a scraggly tomcat that is meowing really REALLY loudly and practically sprinting across the grass to where he hears your voice coming from, and then he bumps against your leg, purring and meowing up a storm while rubbing up against you.
...Also, now that it's still, it seems to be limping. And that sprint made it start bleeding through the bandages wrapped around its body and foreleg.
Don't get him wrong, Esme, he expects a full explanation about why you're here but sdfilknasdfoiwenfr you're HERE!]

Now that she can inspect him up close, her eyes widen worriedly - the cat is covered in bandages, which badly need changing. She sits down beside him, holding her arms out to him invitingly, her voice soft and welcoming. ]
You poor little thing - where in the world have you come from?

He ignores the tearing pain in his leg--he's going to need new stitches--and leaps to her, standing on his hind legs and putting his forepaws on her shoulders so he can properly lick her face. Had he been human, he'd have settled for a hug and kissing her cheeks, but he has long since surrendered to catlike behavior and Esme's face is gonna get a thorough licking.
He has no shame. :| ]

She receives the pounce with a delighted laugh, wrapping her arms gently around the cat's frame so he doesn't lose his balance and hurt himself further. Once her face has been thoroughly licked, she leans forward to place a kiss on the tip of his teensy nose. ]
How could a darling like you ever have come by those wounds, hmm?
[ She assess the situation quickly - those bandages are going to have to come off, now, and if the cuts are as deep as she suspects they are, they're going to have to be stitched. Kitty, what has the world done to you? ]
I hope there isn't someone waiting for you, little one, because you're going to have to come with me.
[ She gives him a stern look. ]
No arguments. It's decided.
[ She feels fairly certain there won't be a frantic owner searching for him, though, because if he did belong to someone, his owner would have taken care of him in the first place. ]

I would be more than happy to help. Where do you need to go?

Oh, anywhere, I suppose. I am completely new and completely unfamiliar...with just about everything, really.
What's the one thing every new person ought to know?

[...She's not kidding.] If I were you, I'd worry more about useless drills and inexplicable magic than anything else.
Also, the ice patch in the middle of the quad. Avoid that.

[ She pauses, wondering why the Academy would have drills that were useless, but inwardly marvels that this is the second time someone has brought up magic - real magic, presumably]
That sounds like it has a story behind it. Probably an interesting one, too.

*God knows this over a thousand-year old gargoyle did, who is still learning new things about this mostly human world.*

They're wonderful!
[Also, hello, new person.]
I'm Esmeralda. It's nice to meet you, monsieur...?

*He pauses*
You're from France! Right? Oh man, what's it like there?

[Oh, Brooklyn, you picked the right subject. Any opportunity to talk about home is a welcome one.]
It's very beautiful but very crowded - well, Paris is, at least. There is never a dull moment, but the city never loses its charm. And once you've tried the food, you will spend the rest of your life missing it.
May I ask where you're from?

I dunno what you just said, but I've got a pretty good sense of direction!
Reply
Do you? I just arrived, so I'm trying to familiarize myself with the Academy, and the area around it. What do you think every new person should see?

[Kronk scratches his head, then crosses his arms.]
Never heard it spoken before, even though I know folks teach it here.
Oooh! Well, when it come to the basics, you've gotta stop by the dining hall. You've gotta know where you're gonna eat. Do you know which dorm you're in yet?

[She offers a little shrug - she didn't have tons of things to pack anyway, but oh well! - and a grin.]
