Title: I love rock and roll
Author: wabbitseason
Fandom: Stargate: Atlantis, set after "Critical Mass" maybe?
Characters: Laura Cadman, Rodney McKay
Spoilers: None
Rating: G
Summary: "And miss your self-affirming female-empowering Pat Benatar moment?"
Words: 408 words
Author's Note: This was started for the lostcityfound's fic battle. *checks date* Yes, well, it's a little tardy. (My most amusing Joan Jett moment was at Stitch N Pitch hearing most of the merry knitters/needleworkers singing "I love rock and roll" at the top of their lungs.)

"I don't give a damn about my reputation!" Laura sang in a brassy voice while listening to the rock music blaring through her headphones. Her fingers flew across the laptop keyboard, while she tapped the rhythm with her foot.

"Your theme song, Cadman?" Rodney sat down across Laura.

"Very funny, Rodney," Laura hit pause on her iPod, but she hadn't stopped typing. "Shouldn't you be off saving the galaxy or something?"

"And miss your self-affirming female-empowering Pat Benatar moment?" Rodney leaned back. "I think not."

"Joan Jett, if you must know," Laura countered.

"Why doesn't it surprise me that under that sweet demeanor lurks a hardened rocker chick? Does Carson see this side of you?"

"All the time," Laura gave Rodney a playful wink. "I have to hand it to Miko. Her music meme has been the talk of Atlantis since it popped up on the chat list."

"It has been revealing," Rodney stifled a laugh. That was putting it mildly. With the expedition spread out over so many countries, the results showed the stark differences and surprising similarities between the cultures. Rodney knew Sheppard's taste for Johnny Cash, suspected Elizabeth's love of world music and confirmed his suspicions with Kavanagh's knowledge of show tunes. He hadn't seen any harm in sharing his own playlist to demonstrate his wide and varied tastes.

"I was surprised by your choices," Laura said. "I expected classical music, not Tragically Hip and Barenaked Ladies."

"Those are Canadian bands," Rodney said. "I'm doing my patriotic duty by supporting my culture."

"Tom Lehrer's Canadian?" Laura asked skeptically.

"New England, close enough," Rodney revised his slight opinion of Cadman. He wouldn't have expected her to recognize Lehrer. Then again her playlist had been equally as eclectic as his list, albeit heavier on female vocalists. "Any self respecting scientist or academic should have his collected works memorized."

"Oh, yeah, Send the Marines is a real hoot and a half," Laura said.

"I'm partial to the Elements myself," Rodney countered.

"Of course you are." Laura scowled. "Was there something you wanted? You don't usually hang out with us lowly grunts."

"I was wondering if you knew what music Katie liked?" Rodney asked. Laura's smile disappeared. "She didn't answer the meme, but you're good friends with her so I thought...."

"Why don't you just simply ask her?" Laura interrupted.

"You mean email her?" Rodney asked.

Laura sighed, "And you wonder why you don't have any luck with women…"
