Well, it mostly has to do with the Jet Stream which is running straight across the United States right now (instead of slightly dipping down, which is usually what happens). This prevents cold air from being carried down from Canada. Several years back, the Jet Stream dipped down further than normal, bringing with it severely cold temperatures. It tends to fluxuate from years to year.
So in short, Canada is hogging all of the cold air.

The real reason is this:
About a month ago I bought myself a really nice winter jacket before it was cold enough to wear it.
Nature is spiting me for my premature purchase.
Damnit.
