Awesome, awesome costume! My son's high school did The Phantom Ship as their haunted house this year - think Pirates of the Carrollbean: The Black Squirrel and you get the idea.
They had to do their own pirate costumes so my mom and I headed off to the fabric store where I found a pattern with historical roots, then picked fabric for her to use. Muslin for the shirt, broadcloth for the pants, and this really cool brown striped fabric for the vest - and we used the wrong side since it looked more accurate.
Creighton worked several different parts/characters and had to be able to fly on the high wire and/or fall *to his death* and land on a giant mattress, so all parts had to be action friendly.
Again, great costume - love how you made it and really loved the shells and barnacle idea! that rocks!
The Black Squirrel ...very clever! And it sounds like it was lots of fun!
What's sort of ironic is that I never made it to my friend's haunted house (half the inspiration for my costume) because my friend was not at work for a few weeks due to knee surgery and I couldn't remember where his family lived.
Unfortunately, my costume was not very "action friendly". The hat was really too small for big noggin, and I crushed it a little every time I shoved it back down onto my head. That would make my wig shift a little, too, so I was constantly adjusting it. The shells didn't hold as securely as I would have liked, although they all managed to stay in place for the day, except the one in my beard. The kids all wanted to have sword fights, and I was afraid that my little $3 cutlass was going to shatter against the scream-ers blood-oozing machetes (not pictured).
I'll definitely be using this costume again some other year.
Amazing costume. I can't get over the work you do to create them. When Scott was into Halloween and we were trying to figure costumes, (and one for me along with him), I used to panic because I'm not terribly creative. I could have used you in my corner helping! ;-)
My mom (and probably a lot of other people) wonder why I put so much effort into my costumes. It's just something I like to do. I have won a few contests, which is really nice, but mostly I just love the reactions I get when I meet people face to face.
