That said, yeah, it's a ludicrous plan. Especially since that means it's Barty Crouch Jr who's been teaching Harry to defend himself ALL YEAR, and doing a GOOD JOB. Once he had Harry's trust, he could easily have hit him with a Petrificus Totalis -- that spell Hermione knew in first year -- turned him into a mink -- like he did to Malfoy in this same book -- then waltzed off school grounds and apparated them both anywhere he wanted to go. No grandstanding tournaments, no convoluted plots, just a simple wizard kidnapping. Heck, if he apparated back right away, he probably wouldn't even have been missed ... not that he would HAVE to keep up the ruse, once Voldy was back.
