In-Character Information
Name: Waddle Dee
Game/Series: Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
Canon Point: Just a few months post-game.
Age & Grade Level: ... Three. In human years, though, he'd probably be about 15. Sophomore, may wind up also being a helper around the school with cleaning and cafeteria aid if this is alright. \o/ It's in his nature to be a little Helper. (... It's capitalized for a reason, shush %D)
Personality:
Waddle Dee in the eyes of other people: "He's probably not anything special."
Who is Waddle Dee in truth? Well, honestly, probably not anything in special to a lot of people. However, like they say, 'bigger things can come in smaller packages.'
Waddle Dee is generally a benevolent soul. He travels instinctively and naturally to find temporarily settlements with food and shelter. Thus, if any one person was to give him the love and care he'd need, however little time of it they give, Waddle Dee will be sure to pay them back. He'll do their chores, he'll cook their food, and he'll even be your little servant. He wants to be kind and, in a roundabout way, even thrives and lives on it. However, this quality makes him easy to manipulate. Niceness and hospitality can easily be faked, and chances are that the fact that it's fake will fly right over his head. All that needs to be done is a generous giving of food and a roof. That's all it takes.
Besides, it's not like it'd be easy for him to make enemies anyway. He kind of hates making enemies, even if he'll help to defeat evil when something is posing a nasty threat. A Dee's gotta do what a Dee's gotta do.
Despite his willingness to help people in return for generous favors, he is not quite the most socially experienced 'Dee. Some Waddle Dee can be more timid than others, and he just so happens to be one of them. It isn't that he doesn't like people or is afraid of them in general. In fact, once he gets used to someone, he might interact with them decently enough and come to love them dearly. He just has some issues, and there are two factors to these issues.
One factor of his timid temperament is his easily-startled nature. Loud noises, large things, or sudden occurrences are enough to make him shrink back and hide behind his parasol at times. Why, pray tell, does he do this? The answer is simple: he's weak. He is very feeble and he knows it very well. Admittedly, he holds a little more endurance than the average Waddle Dee, enough to not drop unconscious in one smack. However, it doesn't mean he is a full-on exception, and so he still doesn't have much stamina. He has always been a flimsy little creature. He just doesn't want his poor little body snapped in two, that's all. It can make him seem, at first glance, pretty spineless.
The second and final aspect of his awkward social skills is the fact that he's short-spoken. He can't exactly think of things to say very easily, nor can he find very good ways to explain things in words. His vocabulary sadly isn't very expansive. He thus prefers to just say as much as he absolutely needs to say to be understood, or what he feels otherwise is a good idea to say. Apart from this, he is very much not a chatterbox. Along with that, he can also talk in fragments. He isn't exactly the smartest Dee in the pile, and this includes in his sentence composition. Expect a few 'meant to do this'es instead of 'I meant to do this'es.
All-in-all, he does like people. He just isn't the best at conversation and looking like a stronger creature is all.
As mentioned, Waddle Dee isn't exactly the brightest of his species. In fact, on certain occasions, he can be pretty dumb. He may not be a total pinhead without a brain, but he certainly isn't smart at all. He's the kind of guy who would hear, "My circadian rhythm is out of whack," and assume that they mean something related to a song. Yyyyeah, he is not exactly intelligent. At all. He is kind of lackluster in quite a few things he does with his poor, diminutive brain. Yes, this includes schoolwork. What a shame.
Despite this, Waddle Dee is still a very hard-worker. When he has a goal in mind, he is never even going to think of wavering from it, no matter how big or small it is. If he has to do something, he is going to do it no matter what, especially if it benefits someone in some way. Even if he messes up in the end, he will try his best, and he will focus. When he's working, it's hard to get his attention to avert to anything else unless it's a responsibility just as important. An admirable trait, or a trait taken a little too far? You decide.
In the end, Waddle Dee may not be very good at being social and is easy to scare, but he loves people and will do anything he can for them. He can be fun-loving, too, but work will always take first place. Instinctively, responsibility comes first. Despite his mind and body always being at work, he is feeble both physically and mentally. He is not strong and he is not intelligent. However, he will still try his best to make his other qualities compensate for that.
Backstory:
No one outside of Dream Land would really know how Waddle Dee courtship and family life is, more than likely. How Waddle Dees are brought into the world is a mystery to many. How does it happen? Is it the same as humans? Not too many people know, but in the end, it happens like everything else in life. One day, it did so happen, and a certain little Waddle Dee was brought into the world to bounce and sleep with other Dees.
Dee grew up like any normal Waddle Dee. He scavenged around Dream Land for fruits and candies to eat with his parents, slept in a tiny dome-like house with a cozy bed, and frolicked in the flowers with other friendly, waddling pals. Academically, he never really excelled. This coupled with the fact that Waddle Dees... don't really have much in the way of school anyway except for little meet-ups wound up in him becoming pretty dim. Of course, he wasn't the only one, and Waddle Dees are docile creatures. Thus, he wasn't bullied for it. Rather, he was accepted with open arms for it.
One could possibly say it was as if he lived in an army of stupidity. Maybe. If they had no soul and heart for cute, springy, cuddly little red balls of adorable. However, I digress.
The Waddle Dee species in general don't consider themselves to be followers of King Dedede, surprisingly. This includes our Waddle Dee of focus in a sense. He never really found himself to be affiliated with the king in an official sense, per se, although he did try to be kind with him. Besides, King Dedede ruled the kingdom that he called his home. Even though he was a bit difficult to work with at times for the Dream Landers (i.e. taking Dream Land's food), Waddle Dee always respected him. He felt glad and privileged to be a part of Dream Land.
However, much like other Waddle Dee, this Dee wanted to wander to new, unknown places in Pop Star. Waddle Dee liked to travel to new towns and cities. He managed to take residence in either hotels or peoples' homes in return for doing favors, which wound up to be surprisingly successful for him. Sometimes, he even wound up getting paid for food on the road or for anything else he wanted. Granted, though, Waddle Dee is a minimalistic guy. Thus, all he spent his money on was food and little bags to keep his edibles in.
The littlest pleasures in life made this Waddle Dee very happy. As skittish as he could be at times, traveling and meeting new people was... nice. He wanted to keep doing it for the rest of his life.
One day, however, his travels would land him into a bit of trouble.
Behold! A magnificent crystal shard from the land of Ripple Star. Of course, Waddle Dee didn't know anything about the strange gem's origins or anything like that. However, being that he's not the most intelligent soul, he ventured into the unknown and poked at it. It shone in a lovely manner in response to his touch. Dee's eyes practically sparkled. He became highly enamored with the new jewel he discovered. If no one else owned it, he wanted it for himself. It was very pretty.
However, he wasn't the only one who wanted that jewel. He turned around, only to see a squirming black mass rise from the ground. He was quick to be startled as it flew into the air. Instead of making the smart move and trying to run from it, he just flipped out in his place and practically let it attack. Dee blacked out, not knowing what had even transpired. All this because he picked up a shiny crystal! Who would have thought?
When Waddle Dee finally woke up, he was confronted with Kirby, a being he recognized. This was the very same Kirby that was around the king sometimes, right? The same Kirby who battled him? Right, it had to be that same Kirby. He also had a funny fairy thing with him- who was that? Waddle Dee didn't recognize her, but she seemed friendly.
After realizing what had happened, he watched Kirby and Ribbon begin to run off to continue their journey: to find all of the crystal shards the strange mass, Dark Matter, had shattered. Waddle Dee felt a strange sense overcome him, as if he felt compelled to help out now that Kirby and Ribbon had helped him. That was very kind of them. He wanted to repay the favor. Without another moment to spare, he ran after them and joined along with the adventure. Kirby and Ribbon were fine with it! He was elated by the very fact.
Adventures, however, weren't always easy-peasy strolls along the park.
Kirby, Waddle Dee, and Ribbon trekked through the autumn-laced woods. It was a bit of a tough journey through, but they made it out alright, and with some crystal shards in their clutches! Once they got most of the way outside of the forest, though, they encountered a young girl that Waddle Dee didn't recognize. Her name was Adeleine, but for the moment, one might has well have called her Dark Matter. She was possessed, as well, just for picking up a pretty crystal shard.
Waddle Dee simply watched as Kirby beat the living matter out of her- literally. It shook him to the bone to know that he was possessed in this very same way! Thankfully, though, that was over... but now this girl was also a victim.
Well, this kind of sucked.
The battle didn't take too long. Once Dark Matter was defeated, Adeleine awakened. She, too, joined their group! Waddle Dee was very relieved and happy to see that she was alright. They left the outskirts of the forest, and with Adeleine in tow and a crystal shard added to their collection, they headed for their next destination: King Dedede's castle.
For a place that is more of an interior area than a place in the wild, the castle was just as difficult to get through. However, they made it to the top with two crystals. Of course, here they were faced with none other than King Dedede himself. Kirby rushed for the crystal shard at his feet. Waddle Dee, needless to say, was surprised when Dedede snatched the crystal before Kirby could get his hands on it.
Of course, maybe Kirby should have been thankful that he didn't take it first. Here came Dark Matter yet again, this time to take King Dedede's body as his own (again?). Kirby had another battle on his hands, and this time, Waddle Dee had a lot more trouble watching. This, unlike Adeleine, was someone he already knew by default. Thus, he didn't even really watch most of it. For the majority of the fight, he had his eyes covered.
Finally, Dedede and Dark Matter fell. Waddle Dee was quick to run to Dedede's side and help him recover, while Kirby, Adeleine, and Ribbon took the crystal and hopped off the side of the castle for their next adventure. Waddle Dee took a moment and prepared to follow, but then paused. Kirby and Dedede knew each other, right? Sure, they had friction, but surely Dedede would be able to help out! However, when Waddle Dee asked, Dedede was quick to refuse. He asked again to make sure Dedede was sure about it, and yep, he was dead-set on not coming.
Waddle Dee ran off to join back up with the gang. One glance back at the castle proved just a sight of the castle behind him. A second glance back at the castle showed him both the castle far behind them... and Dedede running to catch up with them?
MISSION: SUCCESS.
The group of five then moved on to battle Whispy Woods, a much tougher battle, but still something they could overcome. From there, they flew to their next destination, Rock Star, on the crystal. From there, they just basically planet-hopped. From Rock Star to Aqua Star, from Aqua Star to Neo Star, from Neo Star to Shiver Star... and it just felt like it would never end.
However, their next destination would supposedly be their last: Ripple Star. The end was in sight. They would just have to collect the rest of the crystals and defeat Dark Matter. They would then finally be done with their long, tedious adventure!
The five got to Ripple Star with Ribbon now seeming somber. At least, she seemed somber to Dee. It made him a little sad, but all the more determined to help Kirby get to Dark Matter so Ripple Star could be restored again. Ribbon seemed like a nice girl, and everyone else- yes, even Dedede- really looked like they wanted to help her out. Why would Waddle Dee not want to help as much as possible?
Finally, after the toughest planet trek they'd ever endured, they finally reached Ripple Star's palace and combated Dark Matter's core- Miracle Matter. It was a long and difficult fight this time, but they just so managed to defeat it, driving Dark Matter out of Ripple Star for good... right?
The five began to celebrate. Their celebration did not last long.
The completed crystal of Ripple Star shot a beam of magic at the Ripple Star queen, resulting in a black mass of remaining Dark Matter to leave her. It didn't eliminate it. Rather, it only removed it. The mass began to build and grow out in space, very near the somewhat-peaceful Ripple Star. If Dark Matter wasn't defeated for good, it would certainly strike again. This was an opportunity they couldn't waste. They had to defeat Dark Matter.
Kirby summoned a large Warpstar that would carry all five of them to the newly-formed Dark Star. It was finally time to end this- for good. Waddle Dee played his part in opening up a passage way that he believed might lead to the center of Dark Star. Once Kirby hopped in, he sat there and hoped for the best. What if that passageway was the wrong way? What if it'd lead them away from the core? He didn't know, but all he knew was that he tried his best. The best was all he could do.
Moments passed. He heard faint sounds of shooting and battle shrieks coming from very deep within Dark Star. It was enough to send him into a panic, making him run around and pace like a madman (or should I say maddee?). It felt like it wasn't going to end, that it would possibly be hopeless.
It wasn't. Kirby and Ribbon left the core of Dark Star after their triumph over its core creature, 02. They arrived on a Warpstar and retrieved Dedede, Adeleine, and finally, Waddle Dee from the planet. It was going to explode momentarily, so they had to get out fast. They did so, and made it out without a hitch. Their destination: Ripple Star to inform the fairies of their final victory.
The Ripple Star queen was very grateful for their efforts and awarded the group some ribbons with crystal shards attached to them. They weren't of the power-containing variety, of course, but they were almost exactly like the real things in appearance. She gave them to Dedede, Adeleine, Waddle Dee, and Kirby in that order. Waddle Dee held his in his stubby paw with a huge amount of glee coursing through him. He started out his journey with them losing one of these precious gems, and now he ended it gaining one. It felt like a job well-done.
The group, sans Ribbon, then headed home for Popstar in hopes for peace for a time. Surely it wouldn't last forever, but it was something to at least be cherished while it did.
Some time passed, and yes, things had remained peaceful. However, Waddle Dee encountered something new on his travels one day: a Warpstar with a flyer attached to it. The flyer read: "Smash Acadebanany! Come to our CRAZYYYY TRAIN of oranges and apples erratically erring on the edge of E-MAZINGDOM! E-ncredible times are happening until the year the coconut trees stand still! COME OOOON!"
Well... that was strange. (Crazy Hand could probably be blamed for that.) Fruits, though? Hmm. Maybe it was worth a try to check out the school, at least. Dee was getting kind of hungry anyway. It would be nice to check it out!
He hopped onto the Warpstar and flew off to a whole new planet. A whole new place with a brand-new attitude. No, you don't have to catch them all to be the best that you can be.
Smash Academy would be his next adventure.
Anything Else?:
★
Waddle Dee form: His height is a mere 7 inches at a pathetic weight of 5 lbs. He is very tiny and is able to be carried around like a little ball of... well, puff.
★
Human form: He is much taller, but still quite tiny height-wise. He's only a tiny 5'1" and weighs 120 lbs. He is average-ish, if not slightly above average and a bit chubby (being he's on the higher side of 'normal', BMI-wise).
★ He thinks onigiri is MIGHTY FINE. It is his favorite food. He prefers it served next to cake, his second favorite food. (By the way, his favorite cake flavor is red velvet.)
★ He likes jewelry. A lot. They are very shiny and ever since the Crystal Shards escapades, he has had an odd fascination with them. His favorite mineral is copper and his favorite gem is the aquamarine.
★ He also totally collects stamps. Yes. I mean it. Shut up.
★ Like many other Waddle Dee, he has a parasol that he enjoys carrying around with him at times. He likes to jump around and gently float about. How precious. Oh yes, and he sleeps with it, too. It's a bit of a security blanket for him, and he can't sleep without it. Losing his parasol would be a great tragedy.
★ While he would ultimately fail at making vehicles and moving mechanisms, he loves them. That, or loves any activity that involves moving around on sometime. Whether it be riding on a warpstar, paddleboarding (his personal favorite), or mine-carting, he will likely adore it. The only thing he probably wouldn't like is Wheelie-riding. Uh, no, please do not subject him to that.
★ On that note, he hates loud noises. He both finds them a bit bothersome and somewhat scary.
★ He loves cute flowers. Dandelions are his favorite because he can blow on them (... somehow) and make wishes on them.
★ He is a bit of a wimp. He's a little stronger than most Waddle Dee, but still characteristically weak nonetheless. He is also a total pacifist and would rather not actually do the fighting himself. He is also kind of... too scared to fight. Go Dee, joining a fighting school when you can't fight.
★ When he falls or gets hurt, he does not make a thud or any other noise. No. He makes a cute little squeak from his body. It just kind of naturally happens- in his Waddle Dee form, that is.
★ Waddle Dee's speech is... interesting, to say the least. Waddle Dee are apparently able to speak despite lacking mouths, and so Waddle Dee can actually speak better in his normal form than his human form. In his human form, however, he's entirely mute. He cannot open his mouth, and he also lacks the speaking ability his Waddle Dee form possesses, despite his not having a mouth. Thus, it results in him being... mute. He can, however, communicate by writing or drawing on a notepad that he carries in his pocket. With a crayon. Hee.
★ He can also eat while lacking a mouth. In this case, it even works in human form, as that's one ability that is very important to retain in every form. How does he do it?
In-Character 1st person writing sample (journal):
Um, wow, golly... the computers are bright here. I didn't think they'd be that bright. It's a little funny? I think. Is it normal? Is it like TV? I've never had a computer before. Sorry.
Right, yeah. Hi. I'm Waddle Dee. If you want, you can call me Dee... I guess. I like that name. It's alright. Easy to say? Easy, sure.
[Uhhhh, what else does he even... say. What is thinking of things to say on the fly?]
Well, um, I'm gonna be a student, if it's okay. Student. Means... I get to learn? Yeah. Thanks. For letting me live here, I mean. I mean, the headmaster reads this, right? If he can, thanks, because... thanks.
Heehee. [Okay, what next?] Um, if anyone needs someone to clean their windows, I can find something to climb windows with. Cleaning windows, I can do that. I think, yeah. I can help out. Yeah, I promise, I can do that. Yeah.
[And... what next? HM. Hm. Hmmmmm.]
Uh... I guess I'm gonna go for some food now. I can eat the food in the kitchen, right? Any rice balls? I like rice balls. They're pretty good. Thanks.
So uh... what else do I do here? What's there to do for fun? Uh, I hope I'm doing it right. Golly.
[Wow, he is not very good at this. He is just going to leave at that and submit it. Maybe. Sort of. A LITTLE.
He then realizes his post is already up in seconds and is totally surprised. IT'S LIKE MAGIC.]
In-Character 3rd person writing post:
Waddle Dee had no idea he would find a jewel as pretty as a garnet in plain sight.
He was doing nothing more than taking a bit of a stroll, hopping around with his parasol in hand and floating down small hills. It was a normal, sunny day in the city of Final Destination, or perhaps more like the outskirts of the city. It seemed so much like that seemingly normal day at Popstar when he had a fateful encounter with a certain crystal shard.
That also happened to coincidentally be the same moment a large black mass piled on top of him and entered his body with disgusting force. A large black mass that turned him into a possessed, crazed cyclops-esque Waddle Doo.
Waddle Dee would have gulped at the very thought of that memory.
He approached the gem and poked at it with a stubby paw. It seemed to be harmless, just like the crystal shard. It seemed to not have an owner or anyone after it, just like the crystal shard. One would think all of these similarities pointing together would make any other Waddle Dee decide against it. It would make them think that trying to take this jewel lying in the middle of nowhere would be a terrible idea that could end in tragedy.
Needless to say, this Waddle Dee was a bit more of a dunce than that. If he thought about the situation being the same as that one, sure, then he would have avoided it. He didn't exactly have a bad memory, per se. He was just not the brightest bulb in the box, and he couldn't quite put two-and-two together.
Thus, that jewel was in his hands faster than you could say gravy-boat. His eyes practically sparkled when he flipped it in his little paws and examined its gorgeous, ruby-red luster. "Shiny..."
Good thing he was so focused on that gem right about now, as looking behind him wouldn't have been a good idea.
It was ultimately not a good idea to take a gem belonging to a spoiled Koopa Princess.
