In addition, after briefly checking out her journal and website, I have a few more comments.
1. A person is Muslim, things (like art) are Islamic.
2. She appears to have just graduated college, from the U. of T., which is rarely a plus when getting into grad school, especially programs like Berkeley and Brown.
3. She admits in her own journal that she sometimes makes nasty comments aimed at other people when she's feeling insecure about something. It's good to recognize this sort of thing in yourself, but that doesn't excuse making someone else feel bad, whom you don't even know. You, wageslave, have no reason to feel bad about this at all -- you got in on your own merits, and she did not on hers. Fair and square.
4. Want me to go make nasty comments on her journal back?
It's like a color-by-number, except with responses!wageslaveJune 24 2003, 13:10:54 UTC
1. Yeah, I know, but I felt that it would be petty to do things like point out spelling and usage mistakes.
2. Yeah, there were a number of other things about her CV that I inferred from her lj which probably put her at a slight statistical disadvantage. Most of these things could be compensated for by just waiting a year or two and applying again.
3. Preach on, sister.
4. No. I'm assuming that this is over, and that I never have to deal with it again. Thanks for the support, though ;)
I hope that the other 10,000 people who applied to the top Classics programs aren't gunning for you ;)
While there's a certain random element to who they end up admitting, ultimately they're choosing between lots of highly qualified applicants and it comes down to whether or not they think you fit with the school. It's as much about faculty wanting to work with you as it is your qualfications and experience. They admit you because you seem like someone they want to get to know better. It's about intellectual community.
I am influenced by the enormous number of "hangers-on" in the Classics community here (and also where I did my MA, at the University of Chicago). This isn't directed at pompeii79 specifically, but I've known a people who did non-classics undergrad degrees and learned the languages later - some of whom had fantastic ideas and abilities, others of whom had mostly banal ideas. Neither group - the deserving or the undeserving - would ever make it into our program, because the faculty are always looking for new blood

Hey there. I just wanted to let you know that I started a Johnny Depp community called deppanonymous and I am looking for JD fans of many varieties to join. If you are interested, please check us out! Thanks!
P.S. If you received this message already, I apologize! And also, I sent this out to people that have an interest related to Johnny Depp on their profiles. So if this is a "junk message" to you, you can just delete it. Thanks again.
Oy! How do you get mixed up in that kind of mess? My warmest sympathies. Though I'm hoping that when heresiarch implies that U of T is a shit school, she means U of Texas, not U of Toronto. 'cause, you know, U of Toronto is the greatest.
