I get the feeling that Chekhov is better watched (when acted well) than read, at least his plays.

Yeah I'm getting that. I read "The Seagull" today, and have to read "Uncle Vanya" and "Three Sisters" as well by next Monday for my Russian/Polish drama class. We watched most of the first act of "Uncle Vanya" last Monday, and while I didn't get to see all of it, it made more sense than reading "The Seagull" did.
