1. Brick - Ben Folds Five
I never thought of this as a "sad" song even though that's exactly what it is. I think "The Luckiest" is a lot more moving, though in that "makes you tear up because it's so sweet" sort of way. "Mess" is pretty hard to get through at times as well.

12. Just Like Heaven - The Cure
The problem with The Cure is that they have 10,000 sad songs. Again I never thought of "Just Like Heaven" to be all that sad. Maybe that's because I've been so concerned with calling it the greatest pop song ever written (which I will defend to the death). Sometimes bands can write perfection.

Hey you! Thanks for commenting, I've wanted to comment on a couple of your entries, but haven't because I haven't officially been online for about a month. So...

1) I think I purposely tried to steer clear of adding songs with just a bunch of minor chords and lyrics that didn't seem to be written with, or catch the voice of a sad heart, if you will. You know, like some people would add something like I'm Not A Girl by Britney, because it's slow and it tugs at my heart strings. (and no, it really doesn't.)

2) You are right about The Cure, they indeed have about 2 Billion sad songs and I also agree that it is the greatest pop song ever written. Wow, I love that song! I just remember the very first time i heard it back in the day, thinking, "..aw man, poor guy! He lost the girl!" Ah yes, perfection, indeed :)

i have (one) question, (one) comment and (one)concern. question: what are you thinking? comment: everything that you saw wrong with serendipity is what i have wrong with this list. concern: where are the timeless classic sad songs? ben harper? dashboard? DIRTY VEGAS?! the songs aren't that sad...but the list sure is. oh snap
