ahh exciting! i've been to 5 of those cities, but have only self-planned 2! stayed in a hotel in DC in the dupont circle area (you can walk straight from where we stayed to the white house in a lazy 20 minutes, or a speedier 15 - i never noticed the distance as we were chatting). there were some good bars and restaurants around there, but it's quite residential so had a calmness to it too. the museums were brilliant, and we didn't even go to that many - make sure you figure out in advance which your favourites are and that you get to them, otherwise you might get overwhelmed
( ... )
you are dead right, you don't know about a place until you go :) i still haven't been to ground zero, that's the only place in the whole city that i actually want to go to. i enjoyed going up the empire state building, actually. i did that when i went with my family years ago though.
that's good :) how long are you going for, by the way?
Given the price of some of the hotels I've looked at I might be embracing hostel life…
Yeah I'm not really sure where in LA is best to stay - I maybe need to work out what I'm going to be doing and try to find a hotel or hostel close by or something.
Yeah I've heard that about DC! Though seriously anywhere with a Nando's is A+ by me.

I'm not sure if I'm gonna like NYC but I think I'd be stupid if I didn't go to see it!
Thankfully I have plenty of money saved and I'm putting my travel & hopefully most of my accommodation on an 18 months o% purchases credit card so…
