Someone recently emailed me privately to ask what I'm going to do with my life. It was a friendly and welcome "inspirational" question - so, no worries. In response I sent them the first thing that came to mind:

I like being shiftless.
I'm not that interested in "PDP" (public display of prestige).
It would appear, however, that one can't get a job these days without it (PDP)...and I do want to be able to take care of Thrasher in the manner to which he is swiftly becoming accustomed (home-yard-cherries)...and I want to be able to take care of me, too.
All the same, what I perceive to be the ethos of graduate studies worries me...
