Q: When a doctor says that a given procedure "--won't hurt a bit," to whom or to what are they referring?

"This procedure won't hurt (the dental assistant, the drill, or myself) a bit."

Five hours before my root canal. I've been trying to sleep, but I keep having strange dreams about being pregnant and programming in UNIX...

The only bit I can think of is the one in the drill, which can wear down but I don't grok can experience "pain".
