[Santo - Museum District]

[ master post]

Over on the west side of the metro area, and about ten klicks from the ocean, there's a group of stately buildings on a wide avenue.

These are museums. You'd be surprised what people think is worthy of conservation these days. Admission tends to be either cheap or free, so why not take a look?

The idea of a museum was just developing in Gibbs' day. The word meant "place where rich folks keep stuff" and also meant that he would never be allowed anywhere near it.

But in this bizarre world? It's all there for all to see. It's really rather tempting, in fact. He's sure that it's not as easy as it seems, going in and looking and perhaps finding something worth having. There must be security.

But as long as they aren't charging, he's going to look. And so the pirate enters one of the buildings.

"Gibbs!"

Mal was heading back to the ship, when he sees one of their guests from Milliways heading into a museum.

"...You know where you're goin' at all?"

"Of course I do. A sailor always knows where he is at all times. It's second nature."

A pause.

"Which doesn't meant that a local guide wouldn't be welcome."

"O' course. Well -- "

They've moved at that point into the entrance corridor before the actual museum collection, and Mal points at a sign above the door in blocky Chinese characters.

"This is a collection of uniforms. Clothing and the like, different periods."

GAMES THROUGH THE AGES, proclaims the sign outside this building.

It turns out to be a mixture of displays (particularly of the actually valuable artifacts, such as board games from Earth-That-Was) and interactive tables for people to play at, both interspersed with signs about strategy and game theory.

River is currently peering at the glass-encased box for a game called Life.

Mal is very confused.

"A game about prison?"

He hasn't read the explanations yet.

"It's a vehicular principle."

River sounds pretty dubious too.

"Weird. Lead on, lil' one."

The inside of the store has an eerie resemblance to an after-church game room, but with boards and cards that Mal's never heard of or seen before, even in Milliways.

"Okay, you get to explain this one to me?"

Mille Bornes.
