[Video] - Mid Morning, Monday

[Ray's out in his back yard for once, lining up baskets of apples. It looks like he's already been busy harvesting as many of the current windfall of apples as possible. And working hard at it, since his hair is damp with sweat, and he has his shirt mostly unbuttonedIt seems I used up all my scrounging luck finding the materials for a press. ( Read more... )

useful things, he has his priorities, strangely prepared for this, what's this civic-mindedness, the necessities of life, effieciancy first, thinking ahead, a charitable offer?

Such a hard worker, Ray. I don't think I had ever seen that side of you before.

I am not unfamiliar with hard work. And for the chance at hard cider? Willing work indeed.

I guess this is some kind of alcohol, right?

[A broad smile]

Guessed in one. Though I will probably press at least a few bottles of unfermented cider as well.

Finding enough sugar seems like it would be more difficult.

Yeast isn't difficult to make.

The apples provide enough sweetness on their own I believe.

Oh? Not a skill I have, sadly.

It's not just for taste.

...With your current materials, you could try it yourself. Crush up an apple or two, leave sugar on it, and a small bit of water. Leave it for a few days, and hopefully it'll ferment, instead of rot- it's a matter of which bacteria gets there first. That will do as yeast.

With that starter, you can seal it up with the rest of your apples to turn them all into cider. If it's sealed, and you have enough added sugar to feed the fermentation. Or else it'll starve, and you'll have a lot of wet apples.

Or I could find yeast and let the apples' natural sugar serve as food.

But I thank you for the advice.

[One eyebrow goes up.]

The idea surprises you?

Not the idea itself. That it is stated by you, perhaps.

I'm wounded you think so little of me. [He's mostly joking]

I can't build it myself and it would be wrong to ask for assistance to build something just for me.

Tragic. [Paaaause.] If you want to woo my wife some more, she likes caramelized apples better.
