(I left this public for a reason. If you're here randomly, or for whatever reason, please fill out this poll.)

A Man, being born blind, and having a Globe and a Cube, nigh of the same bignes, Committed into his Hands, and being taught or Told, which is Called the Globe, and which the Cube, so as easily to distinguish them by his Touch or Feeling; ( Read more... )

These are very difficult questions. I was really wishing there'd be an "I don't know, maybe" option. Heh ( ... )

I'm taking a summer class on sensation and perception right now. I wasn't looking forward to it at all; it sounded so boring. "...then the sound wave hits the eardrum causing vibrations blah blah blah..." But it really is quite fascinating on many levels.

I think touch is often taken for granted, especially compared to vision and hearing, on a survival level. There was a little girl on Oprah a while back who had no sense of pain. Her parents could never let her out of their site. She'd break bones and get burned and scraped and simply be unaware.

What are we without our senses?

(I randomly picked this icon out of the list, but it's related to this as well. The two segments of the board with the little marks on them are exactly the same color.)

Man, I would think having no sense of pain would be pretty awesome.

Hmm. We watched part of a movie relating to this in my high school psych class. The guy had his sight miraculously restored somehow, but he had a lot of trouble trying to adjust -- for example, he couldn't distinguish an apple from a picture of one. I can't remember what the movie was called.

(P.S. Regarding a different post, congrats on the 4.0.)

That sounds like a neat video to watch.

Thanks, and congrats to you as well!
(And also, "Don't clams have beards?"....that's hilarious.)

Thank you! (And yes, the whole clams ordeal got quite a chuckle out of me.)

Cannot answer... aunt_barb June 1 2006, 23:35:31 UTC
There are so many things left out of the setup, and the answers are too absolute.

As babies we have to learn to use our eyes, and judge distance by sight. How old is this blind person? Do they have the academic knowledge about distance and shape? Even if they do, they may "know" they can reach out and touch something, but not have the ability to interpret the light waves.

On the other hand, if they have not lost their other senses in the process of having sight restored, perhaps this person could be a very fast learner. Who can say "absolutely" one way or another? But my answer is not among the survey results: "probably not at first, but probably fairly quickly, with a little introduction".

I would assume the person was an adult who had learned to function as well as possible without vision.

But I know what you mean. I posted this as more of a "wrap your brain around this, why dontcha" thing than looking for the one correct answer.

I'm debating how to handle this, since you don't want me to talk to you, yet you feel it's somehow appropriate to bring this up in my journal, where I have every right to reply to comments.

What are you talking about?

How am I a fake?

Why am I a bitch?

Consider it done if that's what you'd like.

Josh and I aren't one entity, so please don't group whatever is going on between the two of you with me.

How have I hurt you?

I never accused you of anything.

I took you off my livejournal friends list. That's it. You've had multiple scathing posts about Josh in yours, and I didn't want to read anything more like that. That's not turning a cold shoulder; it's not reading something I don't want to read.

You're right; I don't know you. I never pretended otherwise.

Sarah, what you said to and about me is not about Josh, Jeb or Morgan.
I know what Josh said, and I know what you said. And I had nothing to do with it.
You didn't answer what I asked you, but it's fine. I'd rather just let this go.
