Have you considered the possibility that, if left on their own at the mercy of Nature, that they would not have sprouted; that they gained the will or strength or spirit to survive, because of your intervention?

I am not very knowledgable about plants in general, and seedlings in particular, but I am surprised that some of them sprouted out of the sides of the starter plugs. I had gathered that seeds always sprout and then immediately send shoots UP, as though they know that that is the direction of the sun (and of warmth and light), no matter how you turn them or how they are oriented when planted. I always thought that it would be an interesting experiment for the space shuttle, to see if plant sprouts still grow "up" through the soil, when there is no real "up" to speak of.

They have done that aboard the space shuttle. Without gravity as a guide, the plants responded to light, sending their roots in the opposite direction.
