Character Name: Ian Wavewalker
Character Age: 25, though he is kind of runty and looks a bit younger

Background: Imagine if you will, a world technologically equivalent to 18th-century earth. (Flintlock pistols are as advanced as they get, seriously.) This world is full of all sorts of races and creatures- Elves, Gods, dragons, and a few others that I won't really explain because they have no bearing on this particular application.

Ian himself is part of a species knows as Raptori. (The singular is the same as the plural.) Wile primarily humanoid in appearance, Raptori have scales (usually brightly colored, to blend with the flora and fauna of their home), a long tail, pointed ears, and clawed feet, with the same sickle claw as a velociraptor or a deinonychus. For all intents and purposes, they're anthropomorphic raptor-lizard-people. They tend to average out in height around 7', even the females.

They are also, to put it bluntly, Not Nice. They're self-important, self-serving, rigid in their customs and very, very closed-minded. This pretty makes them ignorant, racist jerks- and sometimes even their own kind aren't immune to their generally scathing attitudes. Yeah. They're big, and mean, and most other people tend to give them a wide berth, and wisely so.

Raptori culture is very structured. They live in medium-to-large-sized Clans- a group of several families, all under the guidance of a council of elders. Mating season is in the early spring, and the females lay their eggs in a communal nest. As such, the whole Clan helps to raise the young- they are trained to hunt and fight, and to otherwise be productive members of the Clan. When the younglings turn eighteen, they are each sent on a hunt. If they return successful, they are granted a surname by the Clan elders, and accepted as an adult.

Ian's life began as nothing spectacular- he was born into a Clan. He followed the rigid customs of his people. He generally adopted their attitude as well, but when it became apparent that Ian was basically the runt of the litter- at 5'5", he's minuscule for a human, let alone a Raptori. He's lithe and sinewy, rather than a thickly-built hunter and fighter- growing up suddenly wasn't easy.

Raptori do not like different, and they do not tolerate failure, and to the Clan at large, Ian was both. He was too small to be of any good. While on some level the elders of the Clan recognized that Ian was still a Raptori, and were therefore willing to let him earn his way, they certainly didn't make it easy on him. They doubled his workload, and required things of him that they did not require of the others. Ian's nestmates, on the other hand, flat-out hated him. So they took it upon themselves to get rid of him.

So, when they were sent on their eighteenth-year hunt, they attacked Ian and left him for dead. Casualties during this rite of passage were rare, but Ian was a weakling. A failure. His loss was understandable.

But it apparently wasn't his time, because he was found by a pair of humans- a girl by the name of Ayla, and her brother, Aaron. Ayla took pity on the Raptori, and with the help of her brother, smuggled him into their village to nurse him back to health. When he finally regained consciousness, he behaved as would any Raptori under the care of a filthy human- but Ayla's kindness was a not unpleasant shock after the cruelty he'd grown up with. Eventually he warmed up to her.

While Aaron and Ayla were both compassionate and accepting of Ian, the members of their village took some convincing. It wasn't easy, but Ian was used to things being difficult, and truth be told, humans were far more forgiving than Raptori could ever be. Eventually, and, oddly enough, Ian was accepted into the village at large.

Odder still, he lived there for the better part of two and a half years. In that time, he became nearly inseparable from Ayla. He would even go so far as to say he loved her.

Unfortunately, Ian was discovered living among the humans by some older members of his Clan. They were outraged- no self-respecting Raptori, even one treated so poorly by his fellows, would ever abandon his Clan. Deserters are not tolerated. They took Ian by surprise and dragged him before the Clan elders to stand trial for his apparent abandonment. He was subsequently marked for execution.

He escaped, however, and ran back to Ayla's village, only to find it gone. It had been razed by Tragedy, a spiteful goddess who travels to the mainland every so often to... well, to live up to her name.

With nothing left, and no one to love, Ian vanished without a trace.

He resurfaced some years later as the captain of a pirate vessel, the Dead End Moon, gaining some notoriety simply by being a Raptori.

Personality: As I stated before, Raptori are mean, and Ian was raised with their mindset. Anyone who is not a Raptori is not worth his time, his effort, or his notice. Even with the cruelty he suffered, it's hard to forget that. In fact he endured it because he didn't want to be considered anything less than a Raptori, even if to some, he already was. Raptori are renowned for their pride, and he was resentful to see his stepped on so much by his own Clan. It wasn't his fault he was so small, and his bloodline was no less pure than any one of his nestmates'. His frustration fueled him, and he became diligent in his work and his training.

He wanted to use his eighteenth-year hunt as his chance to prove himself, and was so focused on finding game that the attack took him completely by surprise. The trauma and bloodloss left his memory of what had happened fragmented, and he steeped himself in denial. His nestmates could not have left him, like so much trash. He was a Raptori. A member of the Clan. Not something to be discarded. He was adamant in his denial, and would lash out at Ayla and her brother. Aaron would just roll his eyes and call him a typical Raptori, but Ayla reacted with kindness, and this confounded him.

Raptori are not incapable of showing kindness, but Ian had never been on the receiving end of any. He was mean and closed off- there was a wall around him that you'd have to take a wrecking ball to to even get close.

Ayla's persistence began to chip away at his defenses. When Ian finally came to terms with what happened that day, it all but broke him, and he would have become a recluse if not for Ayla and Aaron. The former encouraged him, while the latter challenged him to become something better. With their help, Ian began to open up. He slowly became an accepting, and pleasant (if matter-of-fact) person, in contrast to his species as a whole. He still had his Raptori temper, but he became very good at keeping it in check, applying himself to the task with his trademark diligence.

When Tragedy ravaged the human village, though, something bitter settled into his heart. He had, quite literally, lost everything. He had no place among his people, and the new place he had forged was gone.

This world, he decided, had given him nothing, so why should he give anything back? He headed for the coast and hopped onto the first pirate vessel with a captain daft enough to take him.

Ian is a bit of a paradox in some ways. He is still perfectly capable of being kind and accepting. The cruelty of his own kind and the kindness of the humans made him realize that prejudice has no place- least of all on his ship, which hosts a very diverse crew. He believes that it's not what you are, but who. He also knows that the world can be merciless, and so he doesn't waste it on those who don't deserve it. He can be downright ruthless if the situation calls for it.

He is also extremely straightforward, and sometimes tact takes a backseat if he doesn't feel like beating around the bush for diplomacy's sake. Still, he's usually calm when he speaks- almost to the point of nonchalance. He's blunt, but not rude about it. Unless you're rude to him first or he feels he needs to prove a point.

But his honesty and his acceptance earned him the respect of the men who sail under him. They'd follow him anywhere. Even to the end of the world.

Abilities: Ian is fast, and I mean wicked fast. Generally, Raptori naturally have strength exceeding that of an average human, due to their size and strict training regimen. However, Ian didn't have bulk on his side, so he had to hone his skills in other areas. Being fast allowed him to deal as much damage as any of his fellows. He's more of a sprinter than a marathon runner, though.

He's also rather accomplished with a sword, and instead of wielding a cutlass like the average pirate, he uses Aaron's broadsword, salvaged from the wreckage of the village.
