Emerald City episodes 1-5 thoughts (warning for spoilers!)
I’m all caught up on the show, so here are some thoughts.
1. I love the cinematography of the show. It is so damn pretty.
2. I adore that a lot of the main cast are POC.
3. I think there are a lot of cool things being done with characters; and, I love that the show is using a lot of characters that aren’t often used in adaptions. Also - combining characters is something I was wary of, but it is working out well.
4. I’ve noticed that a lot of people are discussing how shady Glinda and the Wizard are. And, are calling West, Tip, and Lucas woobies. People, Glinda and the Wizard are totally shady. BUT, West is torturing and killing and mind raping people, Tip pushed Jack off a balcony, and Lucas is killing people. No one on this show is innocent, which is why I like the characters.
5. So, I think I’ve figured it out: Lucas is the Scarecrow. Eamonn has the same name as the Cowardly Lion, so he’s the Lion post!Wizard. Jack is a cross between Jack Pumpkin Head and the Tin-man. Lady Ev/Princess Langwidere (in the novels she changed her heads and in the show she wears masks) and one of the Ev princesses (who were sold to the Nome King by their father).
6. Tip/Ozma has a really interesting story line. In the novel, the spell keeping Ozma a boy is broken and she just goes off to rule Oz. The fact that she spent her whole life a boy (and therefore should have some psychological issues - how weird and upsetting would it be to wake up as the opposite gender one day?) is never really brought up in the novels. So, I LOVE that the show is discussing how much Tip wants to go back to being a boy, how confusing it is for Tip, and how depressing it is to learn that you can either be a nun or a prostitute. Great, great, great.
7. Dorothy/Lucas. Are people into it? I feel like all the people that loved the 1930s film and wanted Dorothy/Scarecrow are getting their wish. Dorothy and Lucas certainly have chemistry, but I feel like a lot of the reason they are romantic, is because they are all the other has. Like, Dorothy has no one else in Oz and Lucas doesn’t remember anyone else.
8. So…is the Wizard Dorothy’s dad? He is most certainly from our world. But, what is his connection to Dorothy and her mother?
9. Jack and Lady Ev/Princess Langwidere had an awkward and oddly sweet scene at the end of episode five, but…she owns him. I get that she has no idea what a friend is (she thought they were people you buy!) and I understand that Jack is probably looking for someone to care for him, but…I don’t know. I think the actor and actress have chemistry and the relationship has a lot of potential. I just hope it is handled well.
10. Sylvie is adorable and I’m pretty sure Lucas is her father. Or at the very least knew her and was trying to save her before he lost his memory.
11. The ratings for the show are actually fairly terrible. So, I really hope the writers don’t end episode ten on a cliffhanger.
