My radio debut

Sep 29, 2004 20:42

So I had my first show this afternoon as a classical DJ on WHPK (88.5 FM, the pride of the South Side). I've often (or at least sometimes) thought that I would enjoy being on the radio, but it was only the impetus of wanting to have yet more things to do in lieu of my dissertation that prompted me to take action. Inasmuch as I didn't commit any ( Read more... )

So does this station have some kind of webcast for those of us in the immediate vicinity? And did you use some snappy DJ patter, or the more sonorous tones that people on classical stations tend to employ?

You should do some kind of erudite sports talk show. As in, most of the time you wouldn't actually talk about sports, but once in a while it might come up.

Alas, WHPK is not a particularly high-tech operation. As far as I know, it is without Internet simulcasting. For that matter, you can't really hear it any farther north than, say, Soldier Field.

I didn't do much patter, partially because the technical aspects of operating the studio were occupying most of my attention. I did read promotions for the station's reggae shows, though, on the assumption that anyone willing to listen to two hours of classical piano music must also be passionate about reggae.

It now appears that I will be getting a regular show this fall. If you have any helpful ideas for a title and punchy description suitable for an on-air promo, feel free to offer them. (With the understanding that it's going to be a show that plays all sorts of classical keyboard music.) I'm sure Brian at least will be full of suggestions.

OK, but how tied to this format are you? Because I could see an exciting rockabilly show happening. You could play Wanda Jackson and the Collins Kids. At the very least, you should throw in some boogie woogie or Fats Domino every once in a while. After all, you are on the South Side of Chicago.

Or here's another idea - I used to listen to that '80s shows on one of Charlottesville's nonprofit, "Les Temps Perdue," I think it was called. It was '80s music, but good '80s music such as the Replacements and Husker Du. Alice could program the show for you.
